5 years ago, we - a group of Rotarians from the United Kingdom - started a project on the island of Ukerewe in Lake Victoria (Tanzania) to help schools grow crops to feed their pupils. 7 schools (7,000 pupils) participated. Now we have raised enough funds to extend it to 1 new school. Thank you for those who responded to the appeal. We want to do more to help these kids - we want to make their classrooms safe by repairing some damaged ones and reduce classroom overcrowding by building new ones.
As a doctor, I can't think of anything more urgent than containing the Covid-19 Pandemic. However, I find it hard to overlook my fear that the burden of the pandemic will fall disproportionately on poor communities. Will this pandemic result in a whole generation of children like those in Ukerewe be deprived of decent education? What will happen when the pandemic passes and today's children become tomorrow's leaders? Let's together help these children and not abandon them as 'collateral damage'
We saw classes of 200+, pupils sitting on dusty floors, often coming to school with nothing eat. Many class rooms are dilapidated. We want to repair them and build new ones. We've already helped 7 schools to convert unused surrounding land to mini-farms to provide breakfast to pupils and earn a small income for schools. Thank you for helping to extend it to 1 new school. Please help these kids to be safe in schools - safe class rooms and some new ones.
