Dear Friends,
This report is our 5th and final for the year 2022. First, we appreciate your gifts and we highlight Monique on video as a beneficiary of your care and concern. With gratitude, she illustrates her life experience with mental illness and recovery.
We also extend a special thank you to our new donors in 2022, and our recurring donors for staying with us in a way that we rely on. We thank all 100 plus donors today and every day.
In our advocacy work, we continue to raise awareness so that the chaining of people with mental illness will no longer be tolerated at the family, community and societal levels. Enhancing education that mental illness is a medically treatable condition and giving families viable options is critically important. We continue to support Association Saint-Camille (ASC) in West Africa to solve this problem.
We look forward to new ideas and strategy as a result of the conference held in Benin this month entitled Pathways of people with mental Illness in West Africa (Parcours des personnes souffrant de maladies mentales en Afrique de l'Ouest (PAMMAL). This conference is co-hosted by ASC and the Polytechnical School of Abomey-Calavi, Benin and others.
The biggest news this month is that Gregoire Ahongbonon, founder of ASC, has published his autobiography entitled, "They are Living in Chains" in both French and English. Available from the publishers (Artege and Sophia, respectively) and on Amazon. He gives the reader insight into the conditions people endure from a first-hand perspective. Gregoire also discusses his personal journey of how he became the humanitarian he is today.
On behalf of those we serve in West Africa, thank you and best wishes for the new year.
