Project Report | Nov 15, 2024
End of the school year is here!

By Planting Seeds International | Project Leader

We are happy to share a sneak peak of the wonderful graduation ceremonies held at San Lucas, Sacalá and Tioxyá schools.

Sharing the Flavors of Guatemala

Nora is the proud mother of Natalia, a student at our preschool in San Lucas. Originally from a community in Quiché, located in the northwest of Guatemala, Nora grew up surrounded by rich cultural traditions. In search of better job opportunities, she and her husband decided to relocate closer to Guatemala City, eventually settling in San Lucas, just 30 minutes away from the capital.

Nora is not only a dedicated mother but also an active participant in our school’s various workshops and programs. Recently, during a cultural exchange activity aimed at raising awareness about Guatemala’s diversity, Nora delighted students and staff by sharing a delicious and nutritious traditional dish from her hometown.

Discover Boxbol (boh-sh-bol): A Taste of Guatemala’s Ancestral Cuisine

Boxbol is a cherished dish made from güisquil leaves (a type of squash), wrapped around a small portion of corn dough, similar to a tamal. It’s gently boiled and served with a spicy sauce made from powdered squash seeds and peppers.

This ancestral dish holds special significance in many communities, as one of the few traditional recipes still preserved today. It can be enjoyed either hot or cold, making it a perfect travel meal. It is typically served as a side dish at lunch or enjoyed for dinner.

We’re grateful to Nora and her family for sharing their traditions with us and reminding us of the richness of Guatemalan culture.
