Patrimonio siempre alegre!! Where do we go after hurricanes, earthquakes, political unrest, social distancing due to pandemic? Let's go outside. Participant centered experiential outdoor learning and recreation initiative geared towards capacity building and resiliency development for youth and young adults from rural community affected by Hurricanes, Earthquakes, and Covid19.
Sector el Hoyo in Rio Chiquito is a small rural subsection of one of the first-ever settlements recorded as "Barrios" in Ponce, PR. In 1878 Manuel Ubeda y Delgado reported that in Barrio Portugues there were 155 families residing in 33 houses and 100 bohios. Majority of residents are 60+(22%) and still give very detailed anecdotal accounts of extreme poverty and hardship due to lack of access to basic needs such as; water electricity and education.
The community has a long-standing tradition of hard work ethic, community pride, and resiliency. Younger generations are ready, willing, and able to step up to the challenge and together not only continue but raise the bar to a new standard. JSMF works with the community to learn, collaborate, and DO. By supporting this project you will assist Younger generations of this community transition from uncertain times to a quality of life designed with and by them, to achieve sustainability.
The project will provide education, tools, and sustainability resources to a community of 85 families approximately 300+ people to work towards their health, well-being, and improved quality of life.
