As International Women's Month draws to a close, we are reminded that the women who run educares and teach in Mfuleni play an important leadership role in their community. Despite the challenges that Covid-19 has brought, messages such as this one from Nolusindiso Zinyane at Little Angels Educare inspire, encourage and offer hope:
"The success of every woman should be the inspiration of another. We should raise each other up and make sure you're very courageous. Be strong, be extremely kind and above all be humble. Happy Women's Month." To see more messages on Facebook click here
When South Africa moved to Level 2 lockdown educares in our programme had already started to open. Two weeks have now passed but attendance is still very low, raising real concerns that a return to normal is still some way away. Our education team is back on the ground, helping and enabling principals and their teams manage classrooms effectively to mainatin social distancing. Numbers are increasing incrementally as parents watch and wait, concerned for the wellbeing of their children.
I tell you this because with no financial help forthcoming from government educares are struggling to survive, and even the most basic consumables needed to provide a stimulating learning environment are beyond reach of many. So your contributions to this project are becoming a vital life line for survival.
In township communities, educares typically operate from February to November as many parents return to their rural homes for the main holiday period at the end of each year. In 2020, this now means that principals have a maximum of 3 months in which to accumulate sufficient funds to equip their classrooms for the 2021 academic year.
In a few cases, break ins and theft of educational equipment during lockdown has not helped either.
So please continue to donate to this project - your contributions are so highly appreciated and we would like to encourage you to tell your friends. You are making a real difference in the lives of children who have little, and whose prospects are sadly bleak. The loss of opportunity to grow and develop during 2020 in quality learning environments is going to impact these children who cannot afford to lag further behind in their development towards school readiness.
This makes getting off to a great start in 2021 so important - and your continued support will make a significant contribution to helping them on their way! Thank you.
