Summary

Challenge

The coronavirus is on track to infect thousands, even millions of the over 96 million people who live in the slums of India. They will not likely receive any government help. Many are not able to wash their hands often, and most of the families sleep in a single room. A mask is one of the few effective lines of defense that they have.

Solution

The 96 million people who live in the slums of India are at severe risk for contracting the coronavirus. Many of these slums are 30 times more densely populated than New York City and most families sleep in a single room. A mask is one of the few effective lines of defense that can prevent the pandemic from sweeping through these vulnerable populations.

Long-Term Impact

SevaChild is working with its local partners to secure the materials to make effective masks that are washable and reusable. We are distributing the masks to the communities most in need in urban slums and rural villages. Recent studies show that even a simple cotton mask will prevent the spread of the coronavirus from person to person by 50 percent or more.
