We live to celebrate!!

By Christine Macharia | Shelter manager

We live to celebrate!!

Jane (not her real name) is a refugee in Kenya who hails from Congo. Her family relocated to Kenya after they escaped the wrath of organ traffickers in their country. She has five siblings who live with Albinism. Due to her siblings' conditions, they have remained a constant target for organ traffickers. On arrival to Kenya late 2018, Jane fell into a trafficking ring who transferred her to Ethiopia for forced labour. Her ability to freely move around or seek medical care when needed became foreign to her.She lived through this inhumane and indignifying ordeal for 5 months before she managed to run away in April2019.

She managed to escape from the traffickers after one of the traffickers agreed to let her escape for her to seek medical care. She later found her way to the Ethiopia-Kenyan border where she was assisted by border patrol to find her way back home. She was finally reunited with her family at the end of April 2019.

In early November 2019, Jane’s Father had attended one of HAARTS Awareness Workshops in Kangemi. He was eager to learn what trafficking was as this was foreign to him.  After the adjournment of the workshop, he realized that what his daughter had gone through was actually trafficking in persons. He went ahead to narrate the ordeal to the HAART Kenya staff who referred the case for screening and rehabilitative services. Jane was offered psychosocial support, medical care, food support for her family and eventually vocational skills training.

In November 2020, she was enrolled in Wazawazi training school where she was learning how to make leather bags.  She was exceptional in her class and upon completing her course she got a job offer from the school Director. She is now part of the team that stitches the bags for sale at the training institute. Through this Job she is able to make a decent living to better support her family.

Through your support we have been able to reintegrate over 68 girl survivors of human trafficking. They have equally been accorded comprehensive rehabilitative services such as, psychosocial support, legal aid, shelter services, education support, family tracing and reintegration and economic empowerment to their families. We are humble to inform you that we have had zero cases of re-trafficking so far. All this would not have been possible without your support and we are grateful for that.
