Welcome to our June project report.
Whether you have made a general donation, or one that supports the wages of MeRO’s clinical staff, or your generosity has provided medical care to MeRO’s patients, or it has been used to purchase essential medications, medical equipment and supplies, we are all so grateful for your ongoing support.
This quarter has been quite an intense and expensive time for MeRO with 22 patients being admitted and then discharged. Five patients were treated for acute burns injuries. The three children were rescued from regional hospitals, and all had burns to more than 30% of their body which in Nepal, carries a close to 100% mortality rate. Thanks to wonderful medical treatment, nursing care, physiotherapy and rehabilitation, all have all now been discharged, even Sarbendra who we told you about the newsletter before the last one!
Three patients were admitted for release of those pesky burns contractures that keep coming back and four patients were admitted either for or following cardiac surgery. Two of these patients were referred to MeRO because their families had completely run out of money and like the patients with burns, if it were not for MeRO, they also would have died as they would have simply been sent home as their families could no longer pay their medical bills..
Other patients were admitted for follow-up or for the fitting or prosthetic legs; others with complex orthopaedic issues like osteosarcoma, amputations, a spinal tumour and the occasional patient had a nice simple diagnosis like kidney stones!
Their treatment, recovery and rehabilitation would not have been possible without your amazing ongoing support. On behalf of MeRO, everyone at the Shelter and all the patients and their families whose lives you have changed, we would like to say a huge thank you.
With best wishes and grateful thanks,
Virginia Dixon
