We would like to say a huge thank you for your amazing ongoing support in making your regular recurring donations which are helping fund the salaries of NHEDF's nurses. NHEDF's three new nurses are completely ‘blown away’ by the fact that people in different parts of the world care about a country they do not even live in that they would do a thing like this and they, as well as us, think you are absolutely amazing...

Nepal went into lockdown on March 24^th Prior to this date, Samrat sent as many patients as he could back to their villages, and as you can imagine, the personal and economic consequences due to Covid-19 have been and still are devastating. Your generosity continues to make a huge difference to people who are lucky enough to have the support of NHEDF.

Because of you (and thanks to Samrat) the nurses are back at work now under different arrangements. A number of patients have been discharged including Mansur who had lung resection for cancer, Sankar who has a neurological disease, Ravi who experienced multi-trauma after a motor vehicle accident, Nayran who had orthopaedic surgery and Lila who had an obstetric fistula repaired. There are also several new patients who have recently been admitted to NHEDF or are waiting for admission with fractures and tragically one of NHEDF’s patients was a tragedy of the pandemic not through Covid, but she had a massive heart attack and passed away during lockdown – she was booked for urgent cardiac surgery which was cancelled due to Covid. She was only 28 and our hearts go out to her husband and young family.

We hope you are staying safe during these difficult times, and on behalf of all past, present and future patients, and everyone at NHEDF, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your kindness and generosity.

Parbati when she was admitted to NHEDF

To our amazing GlobalGiving donors,

Since our last report, twenty patients have had their lives changed because of you. All the one-off donations you so generously gifted have funded medical and surgical intervention and the purchase of equipment, medications and medical supplies. Regular recurring donations have been put towards the salaries of NHEDF's three nurses and physiotherapist who play a crucial part in changing the lives of people at NHEDF’s Shelter.

We want to share Parbati’s story with you - it has a very happy ending! Without NHEDF, Parbati would have probably lived a life of disability and constant pain. The future for girls like Parbati is complex.Arranged marriage is commonplace in Nepal and she would have probably never have married as women with disabilities are not regarded as suitable brides.

Parbati comes from a very remote region in the far west of Nepal Her parents are elderly, and her family is extremely poor. They have no electricity and their tiny house made of mud and stone was damaged by the earthquake. During the monsoon in 2017 a landslide swept Parbati into a river and she sustained multiple compound fractures of her leg. Parbati’s father had to sell all their land (retaining only the house) in order to pay for 300 days of medical bills incurred before she came to NHEDF on January 26^th, 2017.

Whilst at NHEDF Parbati had several surgeries including bone grafts and a bone marrow transplant and required ongoing nursing care for wound management, care of the external fixators and regular physiotherapy. The first happy part of this story is that Parbati’s leg was saved and she can now walk unaided. She was discharged just short of her third anniversary on January 8^th 2020.

Parbati’s father came with her to NHEDF as her support person. It was during this time that he was diagnosed with a condition that required kidney surgery. The second happy part of this story is that your support and the wonderful people at NHEDF enabled him to access surgery and he also made a good recovery.

The third happy chapter is that during her time at NHEDF, Parbati met another patient, Manish, and they recently got married! The fourth and final chapter is probably the most mind-blowing as Parbati’s family have been able to purchase their land back due to an incredibly generous gift from a long-term NHEDF supporter.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you again for everything that your generosity has made possible and for your amazing support. Without you there would be no NHEDF and none of this would have been possible.

Welcome to Roads to Rehab Nepal's second GlobalGiving report

You are amazing!

Since your initial gift in June, twenty-one patients have had their lives changed because of you. We wish we could put more faces in this report to show you the progress of each and every one of them but we are only allowed 6 photos!

This quarter, diagnoses of NHEDF's patients have ranged from closed head injuries, meningitis, wound infections, fractures, osteosarcoma, kidney disease, domestic violence, chemical burns, burns from fire, wound infections, neurological disease, congenital birth defects and an undiagnosed neurological condition. One patient sadly passed away.

Without your support some of our patients would have undoubtedly died; two would have been left with permanent incontinence; one or possibly two would have required amputations; 7 would have been crippled and permanently disabled with limited mobility; 2 would have failed to receive correct treatment and ongoing care for burns; 4 would have had untreated wound infections leading sepsis, gangrene and loss of limbs and none would not have received any essential physiotherapy so important in rehabiliation. One patient who was injured in the earthquake and has been at NHEDF for a very long time continues to receive full nursing care. For some their roads to rehabilitation are long – for others not so long – they are all different.

All the one-off donations you so generously provided have funded medical and surgical intervention, equipment medications and medical supplies, whilst regular recurring donations have been put towards the salaries of NHEDF's three nurses and physiotherapist. Our fundraising events fill the gaps in salaries.

We also wanted to mention our ‘Bring Christmas Campaign’ which starts on December 3rd and runs for 24 hours. It coincides with both International Day of People with Disability and #Giving Tuesday. We will be sending further information about this special day closer to the time and understand you may not be able to give again but maybe you can share the campaign with others. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank you again for everything that your generosity has made possible and for your amazing support.
