Greetings friends of Haiti.

I am writing on behalf of Edrix Alcime, Asosyasyon Peyizan Fondwa (APF) project leader for the APF tree nursery. The nursery was built last year with seed funding from the Becker Family Foundation. Subsequently, several GlobalGiving donors assisted in providing support for the distribution of the fruit trees to farmer families in Fondwa.

During this reporting period, distribution and training expanded beyond Fondwa to Gromorne and Citronnier thanks to the continued support of GlobalGiving donors, as well as, CEIPAL (a small French organization that has collaborated with APF since 1993). 1,500 seedlings were distributed!

APF is now looking ahead to develop 2022-2023 plans for the tree nursery. The new project will include the production of 5,200 seedlings and the planting of 5,000 of these on a large plot of land. This will not only protect the enviornment, but will produce fruit and wood, as well as, jobs for 50 farmers. We will keep you posted as these new plans develop.

Friends of Rural Haiti:

We are aware that the news you hear from Haiti right now is bleak, and we are not going to lie. It is bleak. Economic decline, rise in kidnappings and violence, a strong earthquake in the south of the country, and the assassination of Haiti’s president. It is hard to visualize Haiti’s future.

The one thing we know to be true is that Haitians have no choice other than to move forward. Especially in rural Haiti, people are left to fend for themselves. This has really been the case all along. Organizations like Asosyasyon Peyizan Fondwa, Peasant Association of Fondwa (APF) have a thirty-year history of putting one foot in front of the other no matter what challenges are in their way.

APF continues to run a primary and secondary school, a rural University, a clinic, an orphanage, and several small businesses and agricultural projects. The small project you funded allows APF to distribute fruit trees grown in the APF nursery to families in the Fondwa region. These are young people, fathers and mothers ... some walking for almost two hours to reach the distribution point.

To date, the first 25 peasant families have received 10 seedlings each, along with the training needed to correctly plant and nurture these trees. Fruit trees provide not only economic opportunity for a family, they also provide sustenance and much-needed reforestation. Trees distributed included papaya, cherry, orange, coffee, breadfruit, and mango.

Even in the midst of such challenge and heartbreak in Haiti, important and sustainable work must continue. And, it does continue thanks to your partnership with us.
