Children who are trafficked go through the unimaginable... but recently, our team has had the special opportunity to see survivors of human trafficking smile and laugh after we took them on a fun outing with staff members. Healing comes in many forms, and in this case it involved… food! We asked 22 male survivors what they wanted to do and they all answered with “Moo Ga Ta” (Thai BBQ) and “KFC”! When we took the boys out for food with staff members, something unexpected happened…
We originally thought that this would be a great opportunity to let them relax and go out in a safe place, but more importantly, they felt more comfortable to open up about their experiences with staff members. Many of the boys felt that the staff truly cared enough to take them out to eat and they started providing even more valuable information about their experience. This helped contribute to their court case since key details are important to prosecute the offender. The survivors also felt like the outing was positive for their mental health.
Because of the success from these 2 outings, we decided to plan a “Game Day” for 21 female victims for human trafficking. The day started with group therapy and they all had a chance to participate in discussion and art therapy. The girls also had a chance to bond with each other and they got to know the staff members outside of the shelter home. After the therapy session, they were able to enjoy many activities such as kayaking, swimming, and karaoke!
We can’t imagine what each survivor has been through, but what we can do is provide support and opportunities for them to feel important, safe, and worthy. Our team feels lucky that we have the chance to directly support survivors, and that would not be possible without your contribution to HUG. Thank YOU for making this possible and for helping us provide support for child survivors of human trafficking.
