Protect CIWY's Wildlife Sanctuaries from Fire

As we predicted last year, the fire season started early this year, mainly due to climate change. We normally prepare for the end of August, but this year our fire monitoring activities began in early June. Unfortunately, slash-and-burn agriculture (burning fields to cultivate the land) is legal in Bolivia, and people often leave their land unattended or do not wait for the fire to be completely extinguished. A bit of wind and the right weather conditions creates the perfect recipe for disaster.

This year, we have implemented various preventive measures to keep fires from spreading to the Sanctuary. These include maintaining our firebreak paths, drone surveillance twice a day, monitoring with satellite images and applications to assess weather conditions, as well as wind direction and speed. At the slightest hint of smoke, our team reacts immediately. Thanks to these measures, we have been able to mitigate several fires that could have spread to the jungle, the mountain, and Ambue Ari before this happened. Additionally, on each trip, we have done some community outreach, raising awareness about responsible burning, the importance of not leaving land unattended while burning, and the need to contact us in case of any emergency.

On Monday, July 2nd, we had the biggest scare, with some slash-and-burn fires right behind the mountain of Ambue Ari. Our team moved quickly, and luckily, the fire was stopped by one of our firebreak paths. Our team managed to control the fire throughout the day without major actions needed.

The fire season is just beginning, and we have a long year ahead of us. However, thanks to your support, we will be able to continue our fire monitoring efforts, protecting the sanctuaries, more than 500 rescued animals, and the thousands of wild animals that now find refuge in Ambue Ari and Jacj Cuisi, which are slowly becoming the last remaining pieces of living jungle in the area.

Como predijimos el año pasado, la temporada de incendios comenzó temprano este año - normalmente, nos preparamos para finales de agosto -, principalmente debido al cambio climático. Por ello, nuestras actividades de monitoreo de incendios empezaron a principios de junio. Lamentablemente, los chaqueos (quemas para sembrar la tierra) son legales en Bolivia, y muchas veces las personas dejan su tierra sin vigilancia o sin esperar a que el fuego se apague por completo. Con un poco de viento y las condiciones climáticas adecuadas, esto se convierte en la receta perfecta para el desastre.

Este año, hemos implementado diversas medidas preventivas para evitar que los incendios se propaguen hacia el Santuario. Estas incluyen el mantenimiento de nuestros senderos cortafuegos, vigilancia con dron dos veces al día, monitoreo mediante imágenes satelitales y aplicaciones para evaluar las condiciones climáticas, así como la dirección y velocidad del viento. Al menor indicio de humo, nuestro equipo acude al lugar. Gracias a estas medidas, hemos logrado mitigar varios fuegos que podrían haberse extendido hacia la selva, la montaña y Ambue Ari, antes de que esto ocurriera. Además, en cada viaje, hemos entablado relaciones con las comunidades cercanas, concienciando sobre la quema responsable, la importancia de no dejar sus terrenos solos mientras se queman y la necesidad de acudir a nosotros en caso de cualquier emergencia.

El lunes 2 de julio tuvimos el mayor susto, con algunos chaqueos justo detrás de la montaña de Ambue Ari. Nuestro equipo se desplazó rápidamente y, por suerte, el fuego fue detenido por uno de nuestros senderos cortafuegos. Nuestro equipo logró controlar el fuego durante el transcurso del día sin la necesidad de más acciones.

La temporada de incendios apenas empieza y nos espera un largo año por delante. Sin embargo, gracias a tu apoyo, podremos continuar con nuestras labores de monitoreo contra incendios, protegiendo los santuarios, a los más de 500 animales rescatados y a los miles de animales que ahora se refugian en Ambue Ari y Jacj Cuisi, que poco a poco se están convirtiendo en los últimos pedazos de selva viva en la zona.
