Protect CIWY's Wildlife Sanctuaries from Fire

Queridos amigos,

En 2023, los incendios forestales afectaron a dos de los santuarios de vida silvestre de CIWY: Jacj Cuisi y Ambue Ari. Durante más de dos meses, nuestro personal y voluntarios trabajaron para proteger las 1.300 hectáreas bajo nuestro cuidado. Estos incendios afectaron en gran medida al Parque Nacional Madidi, una de las áreas protegidas más biodiversas del mundo. Murieron millones de animales silvestres, y muchos otros sufrieron la pérdida de su hábitat.

Afortunadamente pudimos evitar que los incendios causaran daños dentro de los santuarios de CIWY. La lucha contra los incendios fue posible gracias a todas las personas, grupos y organizaciones que nos apoyaron en la compra de equipos e insumos. Estamos profundamente agradecidos con donantes como USTED, que contribuyeron a esta causa.

Las previsiones para el 2024 pintan un panorama bastante sombrío para los bosques bolivianos. La introducción del aceite de palma como combustible, junto con la continua expansión de la agroindustria y los efectos del cambio climático que alteran ,y acortan las temporadas de lluvia, se espera que resulten en temporadas de incendios que comiencen más temprano y duren más tiempo este año. En el pasado, concentramos todos nuestros recursos en proteger el Santuario Ambue Ari. Ahora, más que nunca, necesitamos tu apoyo para proteger dos Santuarios en lugar de solo uno. ¡Por favor, mantente atento a las oportunidades de donación que coincidirán en abril!

In 2023, forest fires affected two of CIWY's wildlife sanctuaries – Jacj Cuisi and Ambue Ari. For more than two months, our staff and volunteers labored to protect the 1,300 hectares under our care. These fires greatly affected Madidi National Park, one of the most biodiverse protected areas in the world. Millions of wild animals died, and many others suffered habitat loss.

Fortunately we were able to stop the fires from doing any damage within CIWY's sanctuaries.The fight against fires was possible thanks to all the people, groups and organizations that supported us in the purchase of equipment and supplies. We are deeply grateful to donors like YOU, who contributed to this cause.

Forecasts for 2024 paint a rather gloomy picture for Bolivian forests. The introduction of palm tree oil for fuel, coupled with the continuous expansion of the agro-industry, and the effects of climate change altering rainfall patterns and shortening rainy seasons, are expected to result in fire seasons starting earlier and lasting longer this year. In the past, we focused all of our resources on protecting Ambue Ari Sanctuary. Now, more than ever, we need your support to protect two Sanctuaries instead of just one.
