This Past Quarter
It has been a busy and productive quarter for the Access to Care program! We completed 2024 with nearly 1000 home visits, caring for over 100 elderly and disabled individuals. Our Manager, Soda, managed the program largely on her own, occasionally supported by local public health caregivers and nurses.
Health Fairs and Workshops
We organized two health fairs in partnership with GPSA student groups, each attended by over 100 people. We focused on workshops to educate caregivers and elders on fall prevention and how to respond to falls.
Students from Australia and the US provided free blood pressure and vision checks, handed out reading glasses, and coached seniors in balance and strength exercises.
Community Collaboration
A key success this quarter was building a wheelchair ramp for our community member, "Wichit". The homes in our local villages all have unpaved dirt paths. in the rainy season, this is all mud, and impossible to move a wheelchair through it.
Our program provided cement and volunteers, while the village contributed additional materials and labor. This project highlighted the strength of community collaboration and the value of working together to improve accessibility.
New Venue
We had our first organic market at our Learning Center in Hang Dong, just south of Chiang Mai. Along with organic produce, we sold biochar, biochar briquettes, and vermicast. Dit's vermicast is now a featured item at our shop.
Looking Ahead - Emergency Response Training for Remote Hill Tribe Villages
Reaching remote hill tribe villages remains difficult due to unpaved roads and limited transportation. With the increasingly severe weather events, such as the flooding in Northern Thailand last year, emergency preparedness is essential to protect lives in remote areas.
Working with local health clinics, we will bring emergency response experts to assist in the training. This program will prepare remote village communities within our Phrao District, to address medical emergencies and disaster preparedness—for all members of these communities.
Your generosity continues to transform lives. Thank you for helping us provide essential care, independence, and dignity to the most vulnerable members of our community.
With best wishes for the month ahead,
Dana, Michael, Evelind, and the Access to Care team
