It was another great year at NVSS. Your students are deeply appreciative that you have made this school possible. The Multipurpose and Dining Hall building is almost done, leaving just the Physics and Chemistry Labs building need to be built before the school is complete. Your donations have helped get the school to where it is today. One of the many exemplary students at NVSS is Maritina, who wouldn’t be exceling in her academics if it wasn’t for the opportunity to attend NVSS.
Maritina has been a student at NVSS since it opened. She was among 100 girls selected to participate in the 2017 WiSci Girls STEAM Camp in Malawi (Women in Science for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics). She was accepted after a highly competitive application process. Now in its third year, the successful WiSci Girls STEAM Camp was organized by The U.S. Department of State’s Office of Global Partnerships, Girl Up, and World Learning. The camp brought together high school girls from Liberia, Malawi, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and the United States, to work together to enhance their STEAM skills, empower them to develop their leadership potential, and build networks with other women in STEAM fields.
The theme of this year’s camp promoted technology to create a safer, more secure world, with a focus on preventing gender-based violence, and offered the girls a new perspective through which to see the world and themselves. The camp also provided opportunities to connect with their peers and build bridges across cultural, ethnic, and geographic divides. Instructors and trainers from Google, Intel, NASA, and ASM taught classes introducing the girls to topics in STEAM. Reflecting on her experience at the camp, Maritina said, “I really can’t wait to share the knowledge and skills that I acquired from the camp with my schoolmates and the community at large.” Attending the WiSci STEAM camp gave Maritina the chance to explore career opportunities that she likely would not have considered before.
The first lady of Malawi also attended the camp, telling the girls, “if our dreams do not scare us, we know that they are not enough.” Maritina will never forget these priceless words and the once in a lifetime experience she had at the camp.
Thank you for providing students at NVSS, like Maritina, with an amazing school!
