Bringing Awareness

Sarahuaro Family Planning Program’s goal is to reduce the unwanted pregnancy and sexual abuse of impoverished women in Los Cabos, Mexico.
Our purpose is to reduce unwanted pregnancy and sexual abuse by bringing awareness to the problems and issues that girls and women face every day living in poverty. We help them question their traditional beliefs and culture that diminished women. Our Family Planning Program not only provides sexual information, but human development classes set up in group- therapy, psychological discussions, and emotional support.
Once a week, our 53 participants that are moms, tutors, and their pre-teen girls, and boys have the opportunity to attend their concerns to our mental health therapist on a one-to-one basis where more in-depth and specific counseling is given at no cost. Counseling may include referral to a qualified government agency for Women and their families. This specific office attends to women under violence, providing, legal, social, and psychological support.

Mom at Twelve
MJ is the oldest daughter. She has two small syblins. Her mother is a single mom and moved to Cabo from Guerrero with her tree children to seek for a better life. Like many people living in poverty she built a room in an invasion land in Cabo San Lucas. Mexico. The little house doesn´t have a real door to keep all family safe, specially when children are alone. MJ and her two little sisters are left alone more than 7 hours each day their mother go to work.
Being 12 years old, MJ started a relationship wit a 17 year old teenager. He left Cabo for good when MJ was pregnant. Giving birth had some complications and she needed a cesarean section . MJ is a 13 year old girl with a 3 month baby girl . She steel complains about cramps she has due to the surgery.
Like MJ many other children living in invansion land are expose to the adversity that can lead to calamity and even tradegy.
Sarahuaro Family Planning Program have the mision to prevent and decrease children and teen pregnancy.
We need your support to reach girls anywhere in Cabo. Girls that are left alone in unsafe homes. Girls that need education about their bodies, sexuality and to elevate their self steem.

Family Planing Parental Guidance

In addition to education on sexuality, contraception, and sexually transmitted diseases to reduce teen pregnancy. Family Planning has positive results when the whole family is educated. Sarahuaro is providing awareness of the problems and issues derived from unwanted pregnancies. Through group therapies and individual counseling, we approach the cultural resistance to change the status quo of no communication about sexuality and of preventing abuse within the families. We do referrals to government agencies that help women and children and remain supportive of our beneficiaries.
Having a space to express themselves as a parent, relieve stress from families, especially for mothers that do not wish their teens made the same mistakes they have made. They want their children to concentrate in school, and not to stop because of pregnancy. Mothers became cooperative and try to communicate better with their children so they are less affected by their circumstances. . In Sarahuaro´s Family Planning Program we go one step further in developing healthy communication among family members. Parental Guidance has a strong impact on preventing teen pregnancy.
