WJI is Ready for 2025!

By Mary Catherine Driese | Impact and Development Officer

The Women’s Justice Initiative is building a just future by investing in the transformative power of women and girls. By bringing rights education and free legal services to rural communities, we empower indigenous women and girls with the knowledge and resources they need to exercise their rights and become changemakers in their communities.

Our Impact in 2024:

In 2024, we provided 1,472 free legal services to women; 1,181 women and girls graduated from our programs; and 420 community leaders and service providers were trained to improve their response to survivors of violence.

2024 was a pivotal year in the implementation of our five-year strategic plan for growth, “A Just Future for Women, Investing in WJI’s Legacy.” Through this ambitious plan, we will scale our work and triple our impact to reach 500,000 individuals by 2027. Our approach centers on three key strategies:

Replicate our programs across the Maya Kaqchikel region of Guatemala to reach 25,000 women and girls in 150 communities.

Scale our legal empowerment methodology across Central America through partnerships with 100 community-based organizations.

Sustain our impact by investing in our organizational capacity and expert team to ensure WJI’s legacy.

Our Plans for 2025:

  • Expand WJI's work to new areas of the Maya Kaqchikel region of Guatemala
  • Provide comprehensive care to survivors of violence by integrating free psychological support into our legal services program
  • Share our methodology with community-based organizations in new regions of Guatemala and Central America
  • Ensure the sustained impact of WJI's work by building the team's capacity through self-care activities and psychological support

We deeply appreciate your support! Stay tuned to see how we achieve our mission to improve the lives of indigenous women and girls through education, access to legal services, and gender-based violence prevention.
