Summary

PREVEBA (Prevencion de la Erosion con Vetiver y Bambu) is a project that focuses on reducing risks due to landslides in homes built on hillsides through the planting of Bamboo and Vetiver barriers. This project will train and educate 30 vulnerable rural female-led families living on the slopes in the municipality of Concepcion del Sur, in the region of Lake Yojoa, an area with a high climatic vulnerability and families at risk of suffering damage due to landslides.

Challenge

According to the UN, Honduras is one of the most vulnerable countries to the climate crisis. Most of the communities in the area near Santa Barbara Mountain live in risk areas due to the inclination of the terrain, which can cause landslides. These can also be caused by rain and hurricanes, which in turn damage homes. Climate change is expected to increase the frequency of heavy rainfall and flooding, further increasing the vulnerability of the community.

Solution

ASOCIALAYO developed an initiative to mitigate these risks, which has helped families improve the conditions of their homes by taking advantage of local resources and labour: the plantation of Bamboo. Bamboo is widely available in the region making it an innovative, low cost method that is easy to replicate while utilizing local resources ecologically. These plants have strong, deep roots, regenerate quickly, are long-lasting and can effectively prevent landslides on the mountain slopes.

Long-Term Impact

PREVEBA goes beyond preventing soil erosion and preserving soil fertility to aid the protection of water bodies from contamination and conserve biodiversity in the soil; thus sustaining the ecological environment. Moreover, this project empowers women as they will be involved in all steps. Finally, a risk management approach to natural disasters with a gender perspective will be included, emphasizing that the vulnerability of women increases after being a victim of a natural disaster.
