Lessons from covid-19

Dear supporters,

Our people in Puerto Rico are well known for saying present in disaster situations no matter the side of the world or magnitude of what happened. Throughout history we have been, usually among the first to arrive, to assist in earthquakes, attacks, hurricanes, tsunamis, and recently the covid.

The pandemic brought restrictions that no one in the world understood, conceived, or had not even experienced. Also, has brought an unprecedented rise in unemployment, the closure of businesses, schools, and affected the general mood or mental health of families globally.

However, alternatives were sought and the benefits offered by the internet, virtual meetings, and social networks were taken advantage of.

To us, this brought us the desire to find a way to continue helping our people without putting our volunteers, partner organizations or those we provide services to at risk.

For our part, we decided to contribute by taking home to home, in the neediest sectors food boxes that provide fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and meats to provide a balanced diet for the whole family.

Thanks to our alliances with over 140 organizations, we are reaching every corner of our Island and assisting thousands of families in dire need.

By taking the necessary security measures and respecting the protocol, we organize drive-thru always protecting those involves.

Despite the consistently stressed social distancing, we were able to make a massive impact, make them feel embraced and above all that no matter what or how we letting them know we will always find a way to be the first to arrive.

Thanks to all the donors who contributed to this massive distribution of food boxes that we will continue to carry out in the coming months.

No matter what there are always ways and means to make others feel that someone will support them.

From the other side of a disaster

Dear supporters,

Puerto Rico and the world have been shaken by the coronavirus pandemic that has exposed innumerable failures in health systems globally. However, it has also allowed us to see and feel the unquenchable commitment of tens of thousands of volunteers who have not stopped for a second trying to meet the needs of those affected.

Even Puerto Rico does not rise from Hurricane Maria when we are affected by dozens of earthquakes, the pandemic and a new hurricane season that is already beginning.

During 2020 Puerto Rico Rises has managed to continue with its missions obtaining the following impact:

1. Over 35,000 people received groceries distributed at the island level. Currently,we began a new phase where we estimate to impact 35,000 more people.

2. Camping tents, gas stoves, water filters, solar showers and bedding sets were distributed to assist those directly affected by the earthquakes.

3. Masks, gloves, and basic necessities were distributed to 3,000 people.

4. Construction materials were distributed to 100 families to rebuild their homes.

On a personal level, I suffered the loss of my home, my beloved dog Sade and all my belongings due to a fire that destroyed my home in a matter of 8 minutes. Live put me on the other side of the disaster. This time I was the one receiving the assistance, the support, and the love of all those volunteers. This terrible situation allowed me to feel the immense relief that those in a situation like mine feel when someone showed up to help.

I can assure you that this experience has made my commitment even greater and more firm so that aid not only continues to come directly into the hands of those who need it but that it arrives faster. and more consistently.
