The inhabitants of our index rural communities continue to enjoy our portable water supply.
However, there have been challenges.
The perennial power supply in Nigeria has got worse in recent times. It is much worse in rural communities like our index communities. For the past six months our communities have not had power supply for a cumulative hour of 30 days!
This has seriously affected water supply from our borehole since we rely solely on this public power supply to pump our water. This has seriously affected these communities negatively. These rural dwellers that have gradually got used to portable water supply with minimal efforts are gradually reverting back to their old sources of water supply; shallow wells and streams.
The severe economic downturn in Nigeria has not help matters as most of the other boreholes in the neighborhood are no longer functioning due to lack of resources to maintain them.
During the period under review two of the overhead tanks in our plant were replaced due to leakage.
There is increased pressure on our water supply due to the reasons stated above. Once there is power supply and we pump water people scramble to get water in all the service points. If power is not sustained, many people go home without water as the reservoir in our storage tanks are emptied quickly.
It cannot be over emphasized that constant power supply is urgently needed to achieve an uninterrupted water supply to our index communities. Alternate supplementary power supply in form of solar power supply seems to be a solution as these communities enjoy good sun light all the year round.
While we are appealing to GlobalGiving and all our numerous donors to donate generously towards this solar project, we will like to thank them for taking this project to this level. Your generous financial contributions for this project have helped to reduce water borne diseases in these communities. It has also helped to reduce absenteeism and lateness to school as the pupils no longer do early morning trips to the stream before preparing for school.
