Ukerewe is an island in Lake Victoria (pop 350,000). There are 130 primary schools - most are poorly provided. This project is to supply locally made desk and benches and at the same time train young people in furniture making and carpentry. The pupils also learn to grow maize and sorghum to make porridge twice a week. Education is the only way out of poverty - this is a sustainable project to help thousands of young people out of poverty through education.
The Ukerewe district has a total of 130 registered primary schools, with a total of 116,523 schoolchildren. The schools have a total of 29,000 desks; the current need, compared with the number of children, is almost 37,000 desks; the deficit is 8,000 desks. Most pupils walk a long way and arrive at school without anything to eat. Most schools do not have access to water.
By making class room desks and benches from local materials and at the same time training teams of young people in carpentry. By cultivating land around schools and creating sustainable farms to grow food for school usage. Shallow wells to provide water for drinking and for irrigation. Safe and environmentally friendly cooking shelters to help pupils cook porridge for feeding pupils once or twice a week. Tree planting - especially fruit trees.
Creating good learning environment , improving attendance, encouraging teachers and community members. Pupils learn sustainable farming, influence their parents. Schools also earn some money by selling surplus produce for items such as pencils and books. Primary education is the stepping stone to further learning. This project will help many young people to have a good start in life.
