Mini-miracle
In October 2024, I went out to Ukerewe with a small team of volunteers to witness the impact of our project. What I saw there can only be described as a mini miracle. You are helping hundreds of primary school pupils to have a mugful of porridge two or three times a week, allowing them to focus on their education.
Most schools we visited on the island of Ukerewe were under-resourced, with about 1000 pupils, many arriving without anything to eat. Some of these pupils, with the help of local volunteers, have transformed unused land around school buildings into well-planned mini farms. We walked through neatly laid raised beds and fields of maize and sorghum, providing enough harvest to make porridge for hundreds of pupils.
The most moving scene was that of a volunteer mum with a baby strapped to her back, serving porridge to grateful pupils. We couldn't resist the urge to join the queue and have a mugful of porridge ourselves.
Many more schools are seeking help to join the farming project. Each school farming project involves careful planning, the involvement of parents and teachers, and the sourcing of seeds, watering cans, and farming tools. It is a two-year project; the first year is mostly focused on training and environmental protection.
No overheads
Thank you for your support. Education is the key to helping these pupils out of the poverty trap. There are so many competing demands for your limited funds.
In this project, every penny you donate is spent on the project – we have no overheads. The project is sustainable, addresses environmental issues, upskills a whole generation of young people, and above all, makes them aware that they are loved.
They say ‘Thank you’.
Call to Action:
We need your continued support to expand this project and reach more schools. Please consider making a donation today to help us provide more resources and training to these communities. Your contribution can make a significant difference in the lives of these children.
