The overall implementation was successful, with the collaborative creation of three pedagogical toolkits, comprising 17 sport game sessions in total. It also enabled the training of 972 education practitioners, including 62% women and 11,968 children, including 50% girls reached. The impact of the project were further levered through a widespread dissemination (10 events across 5 countries, gathering 541 persons, including 48% women/girls) along with effective advocacy with Sports and Education institutions in targeted countries.
Core activities were split into 3 phases.
Phase 1 was launched in February 2019 through a co-creation workshop, that allowed the conception of a first Toolkit which was translated in English, French, Albanian, Serbian, Bulgarian and Czech and aimed at achieving the Specific Objective 1 that was to promote a change in perspective towards disability amongst young European. In total 6 cooperative games were co-created. The kit was then deployed in four countries: France, Czechia, Kosovo and Bulgaria; by four partner implementers (PLAY International France and Kosovo, Bulgarian Sports & Development Association, Czechia National Olympic Committee). In total, 588 trainers (61% women) were trained and benefitting 6105 children (50% girls).
Phase 2 was launched in September 2019 and the Toolkit 2 was finalised in March 2020. It includes 6 cooperative games that were translated in English, French, Albanian, Serbian and Dutch. This kit is linked to Specific Objective 2, which was to make sure that children with disabilities are encouraged, valued and aware of their potential through the practice of sports activities. The kit was then deployed in Bulgaria by the Bulgarian Sports & Development Association. In total, 40 trainers (30% women) were trained and benefitting 507 children (53% girls). Normally, PLAY France and the Académie de Créteil were supposed to also deploy this Kit 2. However, the Covid-19 pandemic prevented the testing and deployment of sessions for Kit 2 in France, due to the closure of schools and incapacity to shift to remote modality for such trainings.
Finally, Phase 3 was launched in November 2021 and the finalized Toolkit 3 included 5 cooperatives games that were translated in English, French, Albanian, Serbian, Bulgarian and Czech. This kit is linked to Specific Objective 3, which was to make sure that positive interactions and friendship between citizens were at the heart of their concerns, sports games becoming a strong link bringing together a public in a situation or not of disability. The creation of this kit, and consequently trainings and deployment to children was particularly affected by the COVID-19 which prevented the partners from meeting for several months, thereby delaying its collaborative creation, and tests on the ground. In spite of delays, the consortium was able to deploy the kit to 3 countries, as planned, in France, Czechia, and Kosovo; by 3 implementing partners (PLAY Kosovo, the French Académie de Créteil, Czechia National Olympic Committee). As such, partners were able to reach 344 educators (68% women) in Spring 2022. However, delays subsequently affected the deployment to children. While educators were equipped (training and kits) to deploy, the end of the school year, concomitant with the end of the project, did not allow the consortium to monitor fully the deployment. As such, by the end of the project, 5356 children (50% female) benefited from the deployment, while it is expected that further deployment will take place from September onwards as school reopen, especially in France.
In parallel, several meetings took place (in Paris in 2019 & 2020, Prague in 2019 & 2021, Sofia in 2020, and Louvain in 2022). Also, Multiplier Sports Events in Kosovo, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, and France enabled wide-spread outreach to youth, educators, and communities. A capitalization study provided interesting insights into the project’s design, deployment and impact. Finally, dissemination of the results was enabled through wide-spread online communication, a final conference, the publication of a dissemination toolkit, and the availability of the kits on PLAY’s media library.
