Venezuela: mending our social fabric via 150 kids

En julio el trabajo a distancia continuó con los chats de WhatsApp (mensajes escritos, de voz y videos), Facebook, SMS y llamadas telefónicas funcionando, a través de los cuales se enviaban las actividades cada lunes para ser llevadas a cabo por los alumnos. En la semana se hacía el seguimiento y cada 15 días, los martes, los representantes acudían a las escuelas para chequear los trabajos realizados, dentro de un horario señalado para evitar aglomeraciones y poder cumplir con el distanciamiento físico necesario y exigido en pandemia. Los alumnos que no contaran con los medios de comunicación mencionados se les hacían llegar, a través de sus representantes, unas guías con ejercicios y tareas que también eran revisadas en la oportunidad señalada anteriormente.   Las lecturas fueron tomadas por los docentes mediante notas de voz o llamadas. El trabajo de los voluntarios de Arteterapia, aliados como Fundación Bigott y la programación de Pastoral y Educación Física también se apoyaron en la estructura descrita. Pudimos observar que a raíz de este modo de interactuar con los niños y representantes la comunidad educativa se benefició generando una mayor comunicación y confianza entre los representantes y docente. El promedio de asistencia de los representantes para la entrega del Portafolio Pedagógico (carpeta con los trabajos de sus hijos) fue de un 85% y las boletas fueron enviadas por correo electrónico, aquellos que no contaban con email les fue leída la boleta vía telefónica. Sólo 13 alumnos de ambas escuelas, de distintos grados, fueron aplazados por no alcanzar las competencias en lengua y matemáticas. El año escolar 2019-2020 cerró con la promoción de 28 alumnos y todos fueron zonificados en escuelas públicas para continuar sus estudios de bachillerato. 

En agosto nuestros docentes continuaron trabajando con los niños de OSCASI apoyándose en los cuadernillos que nuestro aliado ASEINC les facilitó y conservaron la estructura de comunicación, seguimiento y revisión de material que venían haciendo. A su vez ASEINC nos asistió en materia psicológica contactando a algunos de nuestros alumnos que presentaban ellos o sus familiares situaciones que requerían de este tipo de acompañamiento. Este también fue un mes de innovación para la organización porque por primera vez llevamos a cabo nuestro evento de mayor recaudación en un formato distinto. La Verbena de Las Verbena Virtual se hizo logrando llegar a los hogares de los ignacianos en 27 países diferentes, conectándonos, demostrando que la distancia no es un impedimento para apoyar una buena causa y logrando sobrepasar la meta que nos habíamos propuesto. Esto nos compromete a ejecutar alguno de muchos proyectos que servirán para beneficiar a un número mayor de personas y consolidar a la organización aún más como pionera en Educación Alternativa en Venezuela. 

En la segunda semana de septiembre se hizo entrega de kit de alimento a cada alumno, docente y al personal administrativo y obrero de un mes de comida para 5 personas. 

Cercano a esa fecha fuimos visitados en las instalaciones de ambas escuelas por el nuevo Rector del colegio San Ignacio y nos alegró recibir su apoyo y palabras de incentivo para seguir trabajando. 

Se llevaron a cabo las entrevistas del personal de nuevo ingreso con el objetivo de potenciar el equipo con la incorporación de psicopedagogos y psicólogos. Las directoras de las escuelas, la Coordinación Técnica, Coordinación Pedagógica y Dirección Ejecutiva se reunieron vía Zoom para organizar el comienzo del año escolar 2020-2021. La totalidad del personal de las escuelas participó en dos jornadas formativas donde se trataron los temas de Bienestar Espiritual y Personal y el Sentido de Pertenencia Institucional a través del formato de foro chat.  El personal docente fue capacitado con talleres acerca de La Ruta del Aprendizaje a Distancia y Estrategias Tecnológicas de la Educación a Distancia. También se trabajó con los padres y representantes a través de un chat llamado Talleres para Padres los temas de la Disciplina Positiva y La Comunicación no Violenta. A finales de mes se hizo la entrega de los kits escolares (útiles y uniformes) y el Consejo General de Docentes decidió que el proyecto de las escuelas para este año es “Somos Ignacianos de Corazón”.

Octubre ha sido un mes para activarnos con los diagnósticos de aula. Esto significa que cada docente está evaluando a sus alumnos para determinar sus fortalezas y debilidades que le permitirán establecer qué estrategias pedagógicas va a emplear. Los miércoles se están atendiendo a 4 estudiantes cada hora desde las 8 am hasta las 3 pm. Se realizó un concurso, “Producción en Cuarentena”, haciendo énfasis en los aspectos formales de la escritura, ortografía, creatividad, pulcritud en los trabajos, redacción y coherencia. El diagnóstico del plantel lo lleva a cabo cada directora sistematizando los datos de todo el personal de las escuelas para establecer la metodología de trabajo de todo año. Se hizo entrega de kits de higiene y material de bioseguridad (cloro, gel antibacterial, guantes, tapabocas y jabón). Se han realizado reuniones vía Zoom con los voluntarios y aliados para establecer cómo vamos a trabajar con ellos en este primer período e incluir sus aportes al proyecto de escuela. Varios de nuestros docentes están estudiando educación en la Universidad Simón Rodríguez de Palo Verde y culminaron el primer semestre exitosamente.

Fulfilling our mission: remotely and successfully

In July, remote work continued with WhatsApp chats (written messages, voice and videos ), Facebook, SMS and phone calls, through which activities were sent every Monday to be carried out by the students. During the week, the monitoring was done and every 15 days, on Tuesdays, the representatives went to the schools to check the work carried out, within a specified time to avoid crowds and to be able to comply with the necessary and required physical distancing in a pandemic. The students who did not have the aforementioned media were sent, through their representatives, some printed guides with exercises and tasks that were also reviewed at the aforementioned opportunity.   The readings were taken by the teachers through voice notes or phone calls. The work of the Art Therapy volunteers, allies such as the Bigott Foundation and the Pastoral and Physical Education team also relied on the structure described. We were able to observe that as a result of this way of interacting with the children and representatives, the educational community benefited by generating greater communication and trust between the representatives and the teacher. The average attendance of the representatives for the delivery of the Pedagogical Portfolio (folder with their children's work) was 85% and the report cards were sent by email, or we read them via a phone call to those who did not have email. Only 13 students from both schools, of different grades, were postponed for failing to achieve proficiency in language and mathematics. The 2019-2020 school year closed with the promotion of 28 students and all were zoned in public schools to continue their high school studies. 

In August, our teachers continued working with the children of OSCASI, relying on the booklets that our ally ASEINC provided them, and they kept the structure of communication, monitoring and review of material that they had been doing. In turn, ASEINC assisted us in psychological matters by contacting some of our students who presented themselves or their relatives with situations that required this type of accompaniment. This was also a month of innovation for the organization because for the first time we held our highest grossing event in a different format. The Verbena de Las Verbena Virtual was held by reaching the homes in 27 different countries, connecting us, demonstrating that distance is not an impediment to supporting a good cause and surpassing the goal we had set for ourselves. This commits us to carry out new projects that will serve to benefit a greater number of people and consolidate the organization even more as a pioneer in Alternative Education in Venezuela.   

In the second week of September, a food kit was delivered to each student, teacher and administrative and worker staff for a month of food for 5 people. Close to that date we visited the facilities of both schools with the new Principal of the San Ignacio School and we were happy to receive his support and words of encouragement to continue working. 

Interviews with new staff were carried out with the aim of strengthening the team with the incorporation of psychopedagogues and psychologists. The directors of the schools, the Technical Coordination, Pedagogical Coordination and Executive Directorate met via Zoom to organize the start of the 2020-2021 school year. The entire staff of the schools participated in two training sessions where the issues of Spiritual and Personal Well-being and the Sense of Institutional Belonging were discussed through the chat-forum format. The teaching staff was trained with workshops on The Distance Learning Route and Technological Strategies for Distance Education. We also worked with parents and representatives through a chat called Workshops for Parents on two topics:  Positive Discipline and Non-Violent Communication. At the end of the month, the school kits (supplies and uniforms) were delivered and the General Council of Teachers decided that the project of the schools for this year is “We are Ignatians at Heart”. 

October has been a month to get active with classroom diagnostics. This means that each teacher is evaluating their students to determine their strengths and weaknesses that will allow them to establish what pedagogical strategies they will use. On Wednesdays, four students are being served every hour from 8 am to 3 pm. We launche de “Production in Quarantine” challenge, emphasizing the formal aspects of writing, spelling, creativity, neatness in work, writing and coherence. The diagnosis of the campus is carried out by each director, systematizing the data of all the school personnel to establish the work methodology for the entire year. Hygiene kits and biosafety material (chlorine, antibacterial gel, gloves, mask and soap) were delivered. Meetings have been held via Zoom with volunteers and allies to establish how we are going to work with them in this first period and include their contributions to the school project. Several of our teachers are studying education at the Universidad Simón Rodríguez de Palo Verde and successfully completed the first semester.
