By John Roccanova | Director, Grow Against Poverty
Hellen Mukanda, director of Grow Against Poverty – Kenya has received national recognition for the work that she has been doing with Pedal Power for Kenyan Education and other programs and projects. She was recognized for “exemplary and consistent community development initiatives with outstanding results” at a ceremony in Mombasa that was led by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Grow Against Poverty is almost at its fundraising goal for providing 50 bicycles, helmets, safety vests, and tool kits for student use at St. Mary’s School in Nambale, Kenya. Over the fifteen months that the program has been operating, student attendance, promptness, and test scores have all improved. Students who had to walk 5-6 miles each way to and from school now have extra time for studying, helping with family farms, care of siblings, and hopefully for some fun.
Four neighboring schools have requested funds for a similar program. With your continued support, we would like to provide the bicycles and accessories one school at a time. We will be reaching out to donors for our Giving Tuesday and Year-End Campaigns.
