Provide access to healthcare in rural Haiti

Dear Friends of APF, Fondwa, and the APF Clinic in Fondwa Haiti:

Recent reports from the United Nations' top humanitarian official state, "Haiti is in the grip of extreme brutality, with gang-related violence continuing to force thousands from their homes amidst widespread suffering." This on-going situation has many repercussions for the people of Haiti, including inability to move freely around the country, impact on social services and humanitarian aid, wide-spread food insecurity, and economic decline. As we have stated in previous reports, however …

Haitians must continue to move forward, to live their day-to-day lives, to survive, and care for their families.

Outside of Port-au-Prince, it is less difficult to do so. And, as you will see from the information below, the APF Fondwa Clinic had a very busy quarter, with impressive impact and health access and outreach.

From April to June 2023 the APF Fondwa Clinic: 

• We received 189 visits at the clinic, 122 for patients for consultation and 67 for vaccinations.
• On Wednesday, May 31, the clinic staff and doctors held a mobile clinic for students at The University of Fondwa (UNIF), and saw 30 students for consultation.
• Another mobile clinic was held in a different rural community (Kafelompre) on Saturday, June 17. For this clinic, the doctor from the APF Fondwa clinic was joined by a group of Cuban doctors including gynecologists, generalists, surgeons, and obstetricians. 40 patients were seen.
• From April 25 to 30, a focused vaccination campaign was held in the Citronye area. A total of 218 vaccines were given. From May 1 to May 4, another vaccination campaign was held. A total of 114 vaccinations were provided. The vaccines available in this campaign included BCG, PENTAVIRUS, POLIO, VPI, ROTAVIRUS, PNEUMOCOCCAL, ROUGEOLE, RUBEOLE, DITEPER, DIPHTHERIA, AND TETANUS.
• 4 patients were referred to specialized hospitals, and 3 patients were treated in the home.

 The APF Fondwa clinic also hosted several educational sessions this quarter:

• Breast self-palpation for the Fondwa Belvi women's group;
• Understanding female physical development and menstrual cycles for the students of the St. Antoine Fondwa Vocational School;
• Family planning and birth control methods and availability;
• Women’s health awareness at the University of Fondwa (UNIF), and for the general community; and
• Training for parents on the importance of keeping their children hydrated.

 Below are the cases encountered this quarter:

• Acute respiratory infection (acute respiratory infection) IRA
• Arterial hypertension (arterial hypertension)
• Diabetes (diabetes)
• Emergency
• Gastritis
• Typhoid fever (Typhoid fever)
• Genital-urinary infection
• Anemia
• Pririgines dermatosis
• Intestinal parasitosis
• Febrile jaundice syndrome

As you can see, we had a very busy quarter, and our work not only continues, but expands. Your support makes this possible.
