January Report

By Caitlin Clark | Marketing and Communications Officer

Last year's programme faced delays due to the conflict that began almost a year ago, but this year, we are excited to commence with renewed energy and optimism. In a war-torn landscape, our coexistence programme has never been more important, offering a beacon of hope through sport and rugby, demonstrating that we CAN live together.

Thanks to the unwavering support of The Atlas Foundation, our programme provides an invaluable opportunity for 160 pupils, both Arab and Jewish, in Year 5 and Year 6 from four different schools to play Tag Rugby together. Beyond the sport, they cooperate, participate in meaningful conversations, and attend lectures on gender equality, health, and well-being, all united by one joint cause – FUN.

This year, the programme has already made significant strides, including a special lecture by the former Israel Women's 7s Captain, who spoke about the values of sports, rugby, and the vital role of women in leadership. Additionally, two joint events in schools have taken place this week, strengthening bonds and building mutual understanding.

We are also thrilled to announce that the Year 6 leadership team at El-Hiwar School in Haifa is back on track with the dedicated guidance of Coach Nura and Coach Erez. This leadership initiative allows Year 6 students, both boys and girls with prior experience in the programme, to assist coaches in running the weekly Year 5 sessions and upcoming tournaments, empowering them with responsibility and leadership skills.

Looking ahead, a highly anticipated tournament on the grass is scheduled to take place in two weeks, providing another opportunity to bring students together in a spirit of friendly competition and unity.

The Coexistence ATLAS Programme, continues to evolve and expand, with more updates to follow from other schools involved. The programme is supported by an external consultant specializing in mediation through sports, ensuring that all interactions promote mutual respect and understanding. Each session, both in schools and joint events, is conducted by a Hebrew-speaking coach and an Arabic-speaking coach working in full cooperation.

As the programme runs throughout the year, it will culminate in the National Tag Rugby Tournament at the end of the school year, a testament to the power of sport in bridging divides and driving a shared future.
