Pathways to autonomy: tzotzil women's empowerment

Over the past 3 months of the Young Women Business Training Program was affected by COVID-19. Practicing sorority with the artisans we attend the isolation and confinement to make sure the measures prevention against the spreading of the virus in indigenous communities.

To achive our objective, the Binational Network during this time have implemented communication mechanisms and remote training for artisans to continue production, ensuring total quality in each of the products and taking care of prevention measures. Young artisans led the organizational and productive processes, appropriating the systems proposed by the Binational Network.

During the implementation of this project, 7 new collections were developed, by each ESMAS, which were exhibited in domestic or international markets, generating a revenue for the artisans of $23,000 USD.

On the other hand, the artisans have developed new skills for social media management, together they decided filming to share on the online store and the social media (facebook and instagram) of the Binational Network brand MATAT ( @matatmx) , with the aim of invite the society to be sensitive of the situation they are experiencing because of the COVID-19, to solidarize with them by buying their artisanal products and to promote our work.

Through the implementation of the systems proposed by the Binational Network, focused on the improvement´s bussiness management skills, the women artisans have enhanced their leadership, this crisis has shown their solidarity and resilience of women artisans.

Los últimos 3 meses del Programa de Formación Empresarial para Mujeres Jóvenes se vio afectado por el COVID-19. De forma conjunta con las artesanas decidimos acatar las medidas de aislamiento y confinamiento para evitar la propagación del virus en las comunidades indígenas.

Para no interrumpir el proceso de construcción de su autonomía económica decidimos invertir socialmente en la producción de nuevas colecciones e impulsar con mayor intensidad el comercio electrónico a través de la tienda en línea www.matat.org, el objetivo principal es que las mujeres artesanas continúen generando ingresos para ellas y sus familias desde sus hogares y puedan contrarestar los efectos económicos y de seguridad alimentaria que viven en sus comunidades, generados por el COVID-19.

Para ello la Red Binacional implemento mecanismos de comunicación y capacitación a distancia para que las artesanas continuaran con la producción, asegurando la calidad total en cada uno de los productos y cuidando las medidas de prevención. Las jóvenes artesanas lideraron los procesos organizativos y productivos, apropiándose de los sistemas propuestos por la Red.

Durante el tiempo de ejecución del presente proyecto se desarrollaron 6 colecciones para cada una de las ESMAS, que fueron exhibidas en mercados nacionales o internacionales, generando ingresos por un total de $ 23,000 USD.

Por otra parte, las artesanas han desarrollado nuevas habilidades para el manejo de medios, de forma conjunta decidieron filmar un video para compartir en la tienda en línea de la Red Binacional con el objetivo de invitar a la sociedad a ser sensible a la situación que están viviendo, solidarizarse mediante la compra de sus productos artesanales y promover la compra. A través de los sistemas de orden empresarial implementados por la Red Binacional, las mujeres artesanas han potenciado sus liderazgos, esta crisis ha mostrado la solidaridad y resiliencia de las mujeres artesanas.
