Meet Rebecca!

By Daryl Caggiano | GRACE Cares Board Member

Meet Rebecca from Rwanda! Because of the COVID-19 epidemic, she is receiving important supplies from Kali to Kali (one of GRACE Cares’s partners). Here is Rebecca’s story of being in lockdown as shared by her before Kali to Kali started working with her:

“My name is Rebecca and I am 18 years old. I live in Masoro village. I can’t use my legs. During this time in which a global pandemic is going on it's very hard for me as a young girl in the rural part of the country.

I live with my family in a rural village where life is very hard even without a global pandemic... And it has become much worse during these trying times.

My parents are simple workers that earn daily wages which means that for our family to eat and survive they need to work.

These past few months the whole country has been in total lockdown due to the coronavirus, leading to closing of schools and other facilities nationwide. This has been very hard on everyone in the country, especially day-to-day workers like my parents, which led to us struggling very much to get by.

My siblings and I haven't been able to go to school and even though there are lessons on television and on the internet people like me and others I know aren't lucky enough to be able to access them.

Life at home is also very hard, having food to eat has been very hard for us and also being able to follow the required hygiene practices to prevent the spreading of the virus.

We haven't been able to access water and soap to wash our hands as many times as necessary and also use for other activities at home because we can't afford it. This also goes for other hygienic items like sanitary napkins which are also very important for us girls.

All in all, this unexpected pandemic has had a major effect on everyone's lives and it has been much harder for day-to-day workers and their families.”
