Palliative care program remains one of the priority activities of the charity fund “Tabletochki”. Doctors, parents and patients avoid discussing the topic of palliative care and the health care system in Ukraine doesn’t provide sufficient support to such patients.
Thus, after stating the fact that the child is incurable, the palliative patient is sent home without any psychological or financial support. Meanwhile the last days/months of his/her life child requires appropriate treatment, which is aimed to make his/her life less painful and more comfortable.
That is why the charity fund «Tabletochki» purchases for our wards medications, supplies, care products, provides salaries to the doctors and psychologists, buys presents.
Our ward Sofia will turn 11 years on 14.04. She has got malignant ependymoma. She likes painting, working with 3d constructor and loves her family that strongly supports Sofia.
Before the New Year 2018 holiday she had and operation of tumor removal. The operation affected her behavior significantly: she stopped talking, walking, playing. The MRI showed growth of the tumor and metastases.
Occuring vomit resulted in inserting Sofia shunt in order to unload the brain blood flow. It was necessary in order to omit the violation of brain blood flow, hypoxia, brain edema, which would accelerate the lethal outcome.
The mother of Sofia has sent to the Fund the painting of her daugher. We made a t-shirt with printed painting on it and presented it the Sofia. The girl was very much excited to get the present! She continues painting when she feels herself better.
At the moment Sofia gets another course of chemotherapy.
In January-March 2018 we bought the following medications for our palliative wards: Elobiocrin, Avastin, Maklenem, Carboplatin-Vista, Albumin, Diaprazol, Vankomisin, Vankomisin-vokate, Nutriflex, Vinblastine-vinko, Karboplatin-vista, Kaslkori, Azitromizin-farmeks, Kleksan, Albunorm, Geptral, etc.
We also purchased the following care products and consumables: diapers, wet wipes, antiseptic, gauze bandages, urological pads, catheters, bandages, gloves.
Apart from providing families with medications and consumables we give psychological help, cover funeral expenses and pay salaries to the doctors, who provide medical support to the palliative families. In January-March 2018 total expenses for the Palliative care program equaled 10 908 USD.
We are greatful to all donors who made their contributions to support Palliative Care program of the fund.
