This project will provide sanitary kits for underserved girls in the urban slums of Nigeria. Providing Sanitary kits for underprivileged girls in slums will help girls stay in school, reduce transactional sex for pads, and reduce teen pregnancy. The project will also equip the girls with menstrual health management knowledge to help them care for themselves, understand their bodies, and protect them.
In Nigeria, 25 per cent of women lack adequate privacy for defecation, or Menstrual Health Management says the World Bank. Having a menstrual cycle is expensive in Nigeria, and this is also due to the rising cost of a sanitary pad which sells for $1.30 and above. As a result, many girls resort to using cotton wool, tissue paper, a piece of cloth, or anything they can find. It is difficult for girls from poor financial backgrounds. Sometimes period poverty can lead to shame and sexual abuse.
Girl Child Art Foundation (GCAF) will provide sanitary kits for girls with the help of your donation. It will also sensitize the young girls on menstrual health management, sanitation, and how to care for their bodies during periods. In addition, the project will provide answers to hygiene myths, and taboos learned from their uninformed peers. It will also provide counselling support to encourage girls to have period conversations without shame.
Over 200 girls will receive sanitary kits to support their menstrual hygiene and keep them safe from sexual predators through this project. The girls will be knowledgeable on menstrual hygiene management and sanitation, mental fitness and bodily rights. They will learn to be confident in their bodies.
