A Bridge For Progress

A bridge for Progress.

It is an irony, that El Progreso town has seen so little progress.  Truth is that a bridge will catapult the possibilities of development for this community!   You might have read my stories of parents with toddlers on their shoulders trying to make it to the other side of the river, stumbling with the water to their chests, only to decide that it was not possible to be done.  But what to do?  The doctors are on the other side, the high school is on the other side, so is the church, the store and for many: their jobs which put their daily bread on their tables.  I am attaching a video of the struggle that these people deal with every day.  In the video, the lady holding the camera says, “it is not even that high today”. https://www.facebook.com/funcorco/?hc_ref=PAGES_TIMELINE&fref=nf

Personally, when my kids complain about going to school, I picture the morning struggles of parents in El Progreso convincing their children to get up, shower and go to school… knowing that going to school will include a 3 mile walk and crossing this river.  Education is important but is it worth risking your life?   Hummm.

We are getting to the end of our InterAmerican Foundation Grant and since we still had $10,000 US left for community projects we requested permission to use this funding to build a pedestrian bridge on this river, which they accepted.  The Clinica Biblica is donating the time of their engineering department and they have made the plans for the very needed bridge.  We have been  meeting with the community and they were all so excited about the idea, they will be donating their labor.   The materials have been bought and the construction will start soon after, and will hopefully be done by the end of June.  But we still will need around $16,000 USD to build that bridge as needed.

The community needs this bridge and it we won’t give up until it is done.  Some of you guys have donated to this project and your trust and your generosity inspire us.  Please continue to help us by supporting this important effort.

Thank you for your support!
