By Janet Wenhholz | Sr. Assistant to the Executive Director
On behalf of everyone at Operation Freedom Paws (OFP), I want to thank you for the support you provided to our clients and their dogs in 2023. Your donation(s) have enabled us to continue rescuing dogs from shelters, matching them with veterans, first responders, and others with disabilities, and training them together to become successful service dog teams.
We currently have 95 names on our waiting list, and 20 clients actively training. This year we accepted 18 new applicants and conducted public access tests for 12 service dog teams who were certified to OFP's high standards of teamwork between dog and handler. Today, the total number of individuals accepted for service dog training since Mary Cortani started the program in 2010 stands at 530, 70% of whom are military veterans from all branches and eras.
The success our teams experience is really a personal "thank you" from every client to our donors and supporters, because without you this program could not exist. A rescued dog and an injured veteran, civilian or child can heal each other in ways medical science can't predict---or even understand. As Mary Cortani says, "Maybe the best medicine isn't a pill at all; perhaps it's simply a dog!"
