Summary

Venezuela has an education crisis. Hunger, water scarcity, and deteriorating schools are some of the reasons 1.5M children have left school since 2018. The Oasis Project revitalises neglected school sites into vibrant playgrounds with clean drinking water. So far, we have transformed 3 schools, benefitting 1400+ children. We need your help to build a fourth Oasis today! Help inspire children in their education, keep them in school and build a healthier, stronger and happier next generation.

Challenge

Over 80% of the Venezuelan population live in poverty. In a country where resources are so limited and day-to-day life is a struggle for so many, the importance of play, creativity and aspirations for children is often overlooked, and safe public spaces and playgrounds are scarce. But providing children with education, social development, and hope for the future - giving them tools to not only survive but thrive - is a crucial step towards enabling them to exit the cycle of poverty.

Solution

This project will transform barren areas of land in disadvantaged communities into creative, fun, safe places - designed and built by children, for children. Through courses and workshops, children will learn about participatory design and create plans to transform their space, and will then be involved in its building, decorating, and maintenance. These 'oases' will also include water infrastructure - so children have access to clean, potable water, as well as places to relax and play.

Long-Term Impact

This project will give the children of the communities we work in, and future generations, safe places to play - vital for their long-term development - and access to clean water - transformational for their health and ability to learn. For these children, growing up in areas with extremely limited opportunities, this project is also the realisation of something they have created themselves, through their own hard work and imagination; it is proof that their aspirations and hopes are achievable.
