Meet Baraba. She is a 56 year old grandmother raising her six orphaned grandchildren ranging in age from 3-13 years old! Baraba is now the sole provider for them. She has to put clothes on their backs, food in their mouths, and pay for them to go to school- all on her own, without a job, social security, retirement, or any kind of social service support. Luckily for Baraba, she has YOU! Thanks to your generous support, she was able to get a micro-finance loan to buy supplies to make jewelry and baskets to sells. Baraba now has an income and can provide for her grandchildren.
As a young girl, Baraba’s mother taught her how to make baskets. She never thought that the basket making skills she learned so long ago would one day provide for her family. Recently, Baraba was able to increase her skill set even more. She was able to attend a training workshop in Kampala, the capitol of Uganda, where she was taught how to make beads, necklaces, and woven earrings. This helps her generate even more income by having a variety of items that she can sell.
How do the grandmothers like Baraba sell their crafts? We buy them, then sell them through basket parties, our Etsy shop, and at events. All of the profits raised go right back into the Grandmother Programs like the one that helped Baraba and other grandmothers just like her. Want to help? Donate today!
