Kitchen Training

¡Gracias!

***ENGLISH VERSION***

With the support of our generous donors, in November 2018 we started the health project with the help of our allied organization, FUNDAENSALUD.

The first stage was the intervention of our schools' kitchens by a team composed of a chef and two nutritionist doctors. The goal was to improve the nutritional content of our menus while also optimizing the use of resources. There were 15 training sessions with the kitchen staff of both of our two schools and of our logistics headquarters. The team of specialists designed 14 different weekly menus suitable for the ages and nutritional needs previously identified, and specific lists for the purchase of food for each school.
We also started providing the kitchens and staff with new and appropriate equipment in order to incorporate healthier cooking methods.

These measures have substantially improved the operation of our kitchens. And all of our kitchen staff is extremely happy and feeling empowered with the training and all the new knowledge and skills they have gained!

In March 2019 the team of doctors will measure again our children height and weight to evaluate the impact of the first 3 months of intervention in our schools.

We also worked with the children of the schools organizing an organoleptic and nutritional experience where children participated in new vegetable tastings, experiencing novel flavors and unusual smells for them; the most important was the conceptual incorporation of new foods.

In January 2019 the first Community Health Day was held at our school "Beatriz Castillo" in Petare. In total, 111 people from the community surrounding the school attended. Doctors measured size and weight, as well as perform internal medicine and pediatrics diagnostics. The most frequent diseases detected were hypertension and scabies. The medications were prescribed and then we managed to obtain and deliver them. In addition, we created a database to which we have been sending informative SMS with educational content on health issues. This day was very important as it is was the first time, we were helping not only our children but our community!

In February 2019, Odontological Diagnostic sessions were held in our two schools, and a total of 100 children were checked. In total, 392 dental pathologies were identified and prophylaxis, general cleanings and the application of fluoride are the treatments that are most required. At this moment, Venezuela is going through an extremely difficult situation and we are working hard gathering the necessary supplies, we hope that next month we will be able to hold dental sessions to treat all of these cases.

All these achievements would have been impossible without the help of our donors, volunteers, and allies! Thank you
