More than a third of Bulgarians live at risk of poverty and social exclusion. The Nurse Family Partnership is one of the best-tested ways to empower parents living in disadvantaged communities. It consistently delivers meaningful outcomes for children and families throughout the world and is making a profound difference in the lives of young families in Bulgaria. We need your help to keep our home visitors and mediators engaged during a funding gap.
Many young, first-time mothers in Bulgaria do not have good access to prenatal and postnatal care because of poverty and exclusion. These young mothers tend to drop out of school once they become pregnant and then miss out on a chance for professional development. Poverty, youth, and lack of parenting skills make it difficult for our clients to secure their baby's health, safety, and a stimulating environment.
To address these challenges, Bulgaria became the first country in Eastern Europe licensed to implement the Nurse Family Partnership (NFP) program. Two teams of specially trained home visiting nurses and mediators are helping first-time mothers to transform their lives and create better futures for themselves and their babies. The program starts early in pregnancy and continues until the child's second birthday. Nurses become a trusted resource that families can rely on for advice and support.
The NFP is one of the best-tested programs in the world and consistently delivers meaningful outcomes for children and families. NFP Bulgaria recently underwent an external evaluation. It demonstrated that the program is making a real difference in the lives of the families it serves. The evaluation found that the program in Bulgaria has: - Improved child development - Improved Bulgarian language comprehension for the child - Improved contraception knowledge - Improved parenting outcomes
