ONI at Sierra Wixárika
This time we’d like to tell you about the nutritional care we provide to girls and boys that reside in Mesa del Tirador, a community in the county of Bolaños, Jalisco, in which the vast majority of people endure extreme poverty and food insecurity. In order to preserve the health and optimal development of the children, we deliver and produce a follow-up formula , known as ONIformula, with the proper intake of vitamins and minerals that are crucial during childhood. Anthropometric evaluations are also made monthly, so that we can properly document the history of their nutritional health.
Besides that, the registry of lactating and pregnant women in the program is a very significant task we have at ONI, since we evaluate their nutritional state and then proceed to deliver provisions of oatmeal with important nutrients that cover the current needs of their maternal stage.
The ONIformula compliments the diet of our beneficiaries, facilitating the intake of the required nutrients for a healthy nutritious state, which allows them to develop better eating habits and a most advantageous development.
Nurturing stories
The story of Angelita is quite inspiring; she is a promoter of our cause in the center of Mesa del Tirador, she’s a single mom of 3 kids; Carlos of 12 years, Bruno of 10 and Karely of 8, all of them attendees of the ONI program.
She mentions that, since her kids started consuming ONIformula, quite some changes have been visible in them, as in the case of her child Bruno, who entered the program in November of 2015 with severe malnutrition. By the time and with the regular ingest of ONIformula, Bruno reached a healthy weight and gained his health back, which he has kept since September 2018.
His family receives a quite low income, their housing space only suffice for sleeping and eating, and the great majority of what they gain is obtained from financial support or donations in kind. Angelita currently engages in a group of artisan women, from which she obtains the capital to support the basic needs of her family.
“I thank ONI and everyone who makes possible that you are able to help our community, we keep you in our hearts since you do great things for our children”.
