Nigerians navigate their flooded community.
Nigerians navigate their flooded community.

As we wrap up this project on GlobalGiving, we wanted to take a moment to give huge thanks to you for your generous contribution to our humanitarian relief work in Nigeria in response to the floods of the Niger Delta.

Flood-prone communities in Nigeria have been experiencing the devastating effects of the climate crisis. About 110,000 people are estimated to have been affected by climate-induced floods so far, with 92 deaths recorded and more than 5,000 persons displaced. Over 1.4 million others across Nigeria are also affected by the flooding.

In response, ActionAid has provided over 1,200 households with non-food items and cash for food. 500 pregnant and lactating people have also been provided with dignity kits. We continue to prioritize the provision of food, cash, wash and hygiene kits, and other non-food items to women, girls, and people with disabilities.

Mrs. Goodness Johnny is a climate activist in her community on the Niger Delta. She  has received ActionAid trainings in disaster preparation and risk reduction for flooding. Through the program, she and other community leaders also learned how to mobilize and organize themselves into a working group. Within this group, they save up money for an emergency fund and also discuss issues affecting their community. Mrs. Johnny was also one of the beneficiaries of emergency supplies donated by ActionAid at the refugee camp in Kwale during the 2018 flood. These supplies were critical in sustaining her family after they were finally able to return to their community.

Through the community disaster preparedness group, Mrs. Johnny has taken on more of an activist role, calling on world leaders to hold polluters accountable for their role in perpetuating the climate crisis. To Mrs. Johnny, climate justice will be achieved when:  "when floods do not chase her and family out of her community...when floods do not displace her to live with 30 women in a cramped room under terrible conditions...when floods do not submerge her farm and she and her family do not only eat breakfast at noon and dinner at 10pm." The absence of these is what climate justice should be and what ActionAid is fighting for.

At ActionAid, we are pressuring rich countries to finance a loss and damage fund, which will provide funds to low and middle income countries whom are most negatively affected by the climate crisis, to rebuild and recover after they experience a climate disaster.

This work would not be possible without partners like you: caring individuals who are willing to give what they can.

Thank you so much for your generosity and support. We invite you to stay updated with our ongoing humanitarian work by signing up for our newsletter at www.actionaid.org.
