A BEAUTIFUL WAY TO UNDERSTAND LIFE
Ganga is 42 years old and has two daughters, aged 21 and 19. Unfortunately, she lost her husband due to cancer 4 years ago, and his ongoing medical treatment cost Ganga's family a lot of money. Since then, Ganga's life has been filled with struggles. During the earthquake she lost her house, and immediately after the earthquake her younger daughter fell sick. She has had ongoing and frequent fainting spells since. The doctors say they are caused by fear and emotional trauma. Out of worry, Ganga stopped sending her younger daughter to the school and instead took her with her wherever she goes.
During a field visit to Jharuwarasi, our team of Shadow Barefoot Volunteers met Ganga. The team explained about the work they do and when they finished, Ganga started crying and desperately tried to hide her face with both her hands. Our volunteers helped to calm her and asked her about her story. A new beginning started in Ganga's life after meeting our Shadow Barefoot volunteers that day. The volunteers conducted an incense-making training for the women in the community, including Ganga. Ganga's drive to work for her daughters' sake made her a good learner. Today, she is an incense making trainer. With the income she earned from the incense, she managed to take a watch repair training course. Jharuwarashi is a village where women typically do not do such work, but Ganga proved that women can do repair work. Now, she is the owner of a watch repair shop. She is able to generate a good income and address all of her family's financial needs. Recently, her elder daughter got a scholarship, and her younger daughter has started going to school again. Granga says, "I have learnt a beautiful way to understand life."
The Shadow Barefoot Volunteers work to help women to understand the value of their lives. Our volunteers try to teach women that people can be happy with the small things in life, and to be responsive rather than reactive when challenges arise.
