Advocacy for Land Right

By Rubina Acharya | Program Officer

In the year 2060 B.S, with a motive to uplift the existing condition of women of Makwanpur district, ManhariGauPalika, Warda no. 6 Pratapur, an organization called “Mahila Uthhan Tatha Sip Bikash Kendra”, was established. The main objective of the organization was to empower women of that region economically through various capacity building programs.

Organization was established and operated under the leadership of Rina, after her demise, due to the lack of second line leadership, organization was down falling in every aspect. Entire activities of the organization from renewable to auditing and day to day operative and functional part were hampered and organization was in the verge to collapse.

In the process, Tewa decided to provide “Mentorship Program” to the organization in order to bring organization back into normality. Under Tewa’s mentorship Program, Mentee Organizations are provided with various supportive actions in the form of guidance, capacity building programs, leadership development, etc.

Tewa has introduced mentorship program in the organization from past two years. The first and foremost activities conducted after introducing mentorship program was creating an executive boards so, that mentee organization can function formally. After long debate and discussion with all the members, under mentorship program fifth meeting, new elective committee was formed through Annual General Meeting with 11 members under the leadership of Laxmi. Executive committee were coached, guided and trained from time to time so, that they can fulfil their responsibilities responsibly and dutifully. Executive committee started to conduct meetings on a regular basis via physical meet or phone calls in order to make discussion on organization smooth operation and formal functioning. After three years, organization renewal activities was proceeded forward and was completed. Through mentorship program, organization slowly and gradually started to operate functionally and smoothly.

Mentee Organization was fighting for its land issues from a long period of time. When, new elective committee was finally formed, mentee organization was able to get back its legal documents (Lalpurja) of land ownership. Community people were troubling them and were trying to encroach the land from a very long period of time.Today, organization has its own secured land and building, where, they have their own office premise. With the support of Tewa, they have also planted tree around their premise which has made building look more beautiful. They have also been successful in tying cordial relationship with the local agencies and government. Through Tewa’s grant, organization distributed various relief support such as mask, food relief, awareness pamphlets, etc. during pandemic. They also conducted “Awareness program on Covid and its Mitigating Measures” in coordination with Manhari Government Hospital Medical Staffs in prescribed locations.

Through Tewa’s grant and support program, organization is doing very well in agriculture, cattle farming, out of which, they earn in between Nrs. 350,000-7,00,000 (USD 3,500.00-7,000.00) of annual income. Mentorship Program has helped organization to grow and expand. They conduct AGM every year, perform audit and renewal activities on a regular basis. They have also learned to establish cordial relationship with local agencies, identifying target communities and their needs. Organization today has become a strength of pillar to local communities and women out there.
