Case Story 1:
This story is not about a single individual, the story is about 13 differently abled people. Working with marginalized groups of people has always been a priority for Tewa and our volunteers and now our HTG volunteers of Dharmasthali after successfully completing the basic tailoring to 28 women now have focused on giving tailoring training to 13 differently abled individuals (3 women and 10 men) for six months. There is a mixture of different abilities hence they will be using both foot and hand machines depending upon their abilities.
It will be a pride for this group of individuals to live their lives being self employed and they will be a good inspiration for the whole community.
Case Story 2:
Pabitra, is a single mother of 4 children (2 daughters and 2 sons). The earthquake destroyed her home completely leaving them in an unsafe temporary settlement. Fortunately she got an opportunity to be engaged in the Paurakhi Maheela Samaj, an organization formed with the initiative of the Tewa HTG volunteers at Ramechhap. She now has learnt new skills of making handmade bangles. This skill gave her the confidence to borrow a loan of Rs. 50,000 ($476.00) to buy the raw materials so that she could start her own business. Now by selling the handmade bangles and ear studs she has already managed to pay back half the loan.
Previously she couldn’t meet the needs of her children because she did not have a regular source of income, but now she is very happy that she has the skill which is helping her to earn some money and support her family. Pabitra thanked Tewa for providing her with an opportunity to get the training, build her self-confidence, and make her understand the value of being organized in a group.
Our movement of Shadow Barefoot Volunteers, has brought many programmes like sewing, knitting, cooking food, etc for earthquake survivors women so that they can be empowered themselves and besides this our HTG volunteers have also focused on awareness campaigns regarding health and hygiene, women's rights, violence against women
In Jharuwarashi, Lalitpur literacy classes are ongoing with 13 women, including 2 youth and 2 indigenous people participating in it. These women are now able to read and write, and are also able to send message from their mobile phones. Now these women say, "Just a little support and love will allow us to stand on our own feet and contribute to our communities".
The key thing that Tewa/NA learnt from this earthquake is nothing is impossible if we join hands to bring a solid impact in the society. Tewa/NA has published a joint research on 2nd September, 2016: A Gendered Look into Bhaktapur's Recovery and Rebuilding, an Applied Research written by Rita Thapa and the background paper on Bhaktapur as a world heritage city, written by Professor Purusottam Lochan Shrestha. This research can be helpful in engendering recovery work, especially in heritage sites. The completion of the research within a year, from start to finish, we found to be no less than a miracle given our conditions and the unofficial India blockade during the year.
Tewa/NA could only do their share owing to the unprecedented and timely support they received from their donors. Much work remains since the government has not yet moved effectively with its recovery work. Rebuilding is moving at a snail's pace. The devastation is heartbreaking to see. At least in communities where Tewa/NA are present we know that many lives are changing for better and people are learning the importance of community philanthropy and we believe that this message will be widely spread throughout the country and one day our country will be an example on community philanthropy.
