The Power of Support

By Muna Pokharel | LM&E Officer

Ms. Bogati, a resident of Dordi Rural Municipality, Ward No. 6, Lamjung District Npeal is a second wife and a mother of a grade 9 daughter. Despite her dream of becoming a social worker and engaging in women's groups for community development, Ms. Bogati life revolves around endless household chores. As the sole woman in the household, she is responsible for all domestic duties, including cleaning, cooking, and getting her daughter ready for school. This leaves her little time for social activities or visiting family.

Her husband, a vegetable farmer, spends his days working, and when he is home, he doesn't help with chores, preferring to rest. She also assists him with the farming tasks.

She is a member of WAWCAS (Women at Work Children at School), a self-led women's organization in Lamjung. With financial support from Tewa NRs. 100,000 (USD 745.00), WAWCAS organized discussions on gender roles for couples in the community. Ms. Bogati and her husband participated and learned that both men and women are equal and can share household chores. The discussions highlighted how patriarchal mindsets shape these roles and emphasized the importance of equal responsibility.

Since the discussion, her husband has made positive changes. He now helps with household chores, including making tea, making the bed, dusting, and cooking occasionally. As a member of the School Management Committee and other local groups, she can now attend meetings, knowing her husband will assist with the housework in her absence.

She is grateful to WAWCAS Lamjung and Tewa for their support, which has allowed her to pursue her dreams and achieve a more balanced and fulfilling life.
