Relief rebuilding to 25 communities in Nepal

Between September 26 and 28, 2024, Nepal experienced continuous rainfall that resulted in widespread flooding, inundation, and landslide across various regions. The intense downpour particularly in the Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, led to flash floods and river overflows, severely affecting the lives of many individuals. Additionally, moderate to heavy rainfall impacted other provinces, causing water levels in the Bagmati and Koshi rivers to rise above dangers thresholds.

The flooding and landslides have had a profound impact on communities, displacing families, damaging homes and disrupting access to essential resources. Many individuals are struggling to meet their basic needs, including food, clothing and medical care.

In response to the disaster, Tewa has stepped in to provide critical support to affected communities. To date, Tewa has distributed grant support across province 1,3 and 6, covering six districts and partnering with ten grantee organizations.

The support from Tewa has focused on addressing urgent needs, including foods supplies, warm clothing, hygiene and sanitary kits, medicines, disability-friendly materials, cooking utensils and stoves, water resource conservation and temporary water supply solutions.

Tewa has disbursed a total of NRs. 57,95,000.00 (USD 42,942.00) to support these initiatives, targeting needy women's organizations and groups. The financial assistance has been crucial in enabling these organizations to respond effectively to needs of their communities.

Ms. Majhi, 32, a resident of Katahari Rural Municipality, ward no. 1, Maheshpur is married living with her kids and husband. Her husband is daily wage worker but his chances of getting daily work is not ensured every day. As her husband’s income is not sufficient to cover the expenses of their child’s education and other daily expenses, the family has to depend upon her.

She had already taken training on tailoring and started sewing clothes at home utilizing her spare time but she did not have an idea and confidence to run a tailor shop properly. One day, she came to know that Nari Bikash Sangh (Tewa's Grantee Partner) with the support of Tewa is going to conduct a training on Entrepreneurship for women in the nearby village and decided to participate. While participating in the training, she learnt about different skills that is needed to be a professional tailor, which is budgeting, pricing of different items, profit and loss and decoration of the shop to attract the customer. Being aware of those skills, she started practicing professional tailoring at village. Nowadays, she is busy working as a tailor, especially in the time of festivals. As her business is growing every day, she has just hired a staff to assist her work. She is now able to make different varieties of clothes which includes simple & designed blouse, different designed suits. She is now able to earn money up to Rs. 30,000.00 (USD 224.00) per month which made her self-reliant. With her income, she can pay the school fees of her children who are studying now in English medium school. Nowadays, she goes to health clinics as soon as she feels unwell. She also has time to look-after her home & kids. Not only she covers the expenses, she also saves some amount from her income in revolving fund operated by women group. She realized that her social status has improved after she started earning consistently.
