Challenge

Africa is facing an alarming outbreak of Mpox (monkeypox), especially in the province of Sud Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The virus mutation was first sequenced in 2023, and since then, the outbreak has affected more than 6,000 people, with a high incidence in children. Conditions at the hospital in Karanda, designated to treat those infected, are precarious, with no clean water or electricity. Overcrowding and lack of medical care.

Solution

Coopera NGDO is determined to combat the humanitarian catastrophe that Mpox is unleashing in Africa by mobilizing to save lives in devastated areas. They want to transform collapsed hospitals, such as the one in Karanda, by providing clean water, electricity and urgent medical care to thousands of infected people, many of them children. Their mission is to stop the spread of the virus that has crossed borders, and to prevent more tragic deaths caused by the lack of basic resources.

Long-Term Impact

If the Mpox virus is not curbed and the pandemic continues unchecked, the long-term impact could be devastating. Affected communities would face a rising mortality rate, especially among children, with thousands succumbing for lack of medical care. The collapse of the healthcare system would exacerbate the situation, leading to a large-scale humanitarian crisis. In addition, the spread of the virus regionally and globally is affecting the economy and social stability in several countries.
