How are young people involved and encouraged to be

By XILOTL ASOCIACION PARA EL DESARROLLO SOCIAL | Vilma Gutierrez Madueno, Lider del Proyecto

How are young people involved and encouraged to be leaders in the community?

Young men and women have aspirations for higher incomes, which is why they emigrate. Therefore, the service strategy focuses on facilitating the creation of ventures that are very attractive to them. The lack of their own land has motivated young people to begin to apply agroecological techniques and regenerative agriculture practices, which has stimulated them to produce their own food.

Master Milo (promoter) shares the themes of new masculinities with 10 young alcoholics from the group he presides over in his community. For his part, the promoter Efraín shares these songs with his group of 10 young musicians. This semester, young people from the Las Tazas Baccalaureate Center began to be sensitized on the issues of gender, leadership and empowerment with the methodological guide of the New Men's Gaze Network.

The women of the Network encourage the participation of young people in recreational and sports activities, as well as when they attend spaces for dialogue or workshops. In the case of the Las Tazas community, 20 young people from the Church have been involved to identify their problems and address them: for example, the prevention of pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases, prevention of drug use, the incorrect use of new technologies. In the case of San Antonio, the promoters influence young people through the health center with issues of family planning, personal hygiene and the rights of children and youth. In the area of New Masculinities, 18 months ago we worked with social service students who constitute themselves as agents of change and share what they have learned with 60 adolescents from 2 secondary schools.
