On Saturday, June 16th the 18th Annual Mereoball New York Ave Youth streetball League kicked off as scheduled! This was a very exciting thing because we up until as late as 2 days before the scheduled kick off, we didn't know if we were going to have to cancel the entire event. Shoe City came through for us at the 11th hour with the jerseys and Unitees Screen printing rushed the printing and numbering with help from Metroball staff. We were able to get most of the younger kids jerseys completed so we could at least start the event. The older youth will begin playing next weekend.
It was beautiful weather and the atmosphere was great to make it a beautiful event. Games began @11:30am with youth as young as 8 yrs old playing as hard as they could. DC Public Libraries donated all sorts of books (mostly children books) that were on display to give away to parents and kids. by 2pm, more than 250 books were given out to prospective readers. It was a festive affair that had everyone engaged. All though the older youth weren't playing this week, they came out to either coach or support the younger youth. The event has continued the tradition to serve it's purpose. Uniting youth and promoting healthy play!
This was only Week 1. We have 9 more weeks to go!! The kick off was a success. Check out pictures from this past weekend.
