Finding Family and Providing Aid in a Time of War

By Rachel Cvitanovich | Development Coordinator

The 3 Children and their foster family
The 3 Children and their foster family

Shortly before the war began, three young siblings had no one to care for them after their mother passed away from cancer and their father left them at a young age. The three siblings were still residing in a temporary state-run shelter when the war broke out. When a Kidsave team member found out about these children, she immediately started looking for a new family for them. That is when she found foster parents in Ukraine who were more than happy to take in the three children. The parents stated, “We feel that giving our love and family to children, especially those from occupied territories, is the meaning and purpose of our lives.” Over several years, the couple has loved and raised 10 foster children. With many growing up and moving out, the family opens their arms to new children in need. Although the system may see them as foster children, the couple does not see it that way. “This is just a big family; they are all our children forever.”

Today, the three siblings are safe and happy with the couple and their children. The foster mother describes them all as sweet and loving, especially the big brother. The two girls have struggled some with the transition, especially after losing their mother and being moved from place to place at such a young age. The family is committed to supporting them and getting them the help, they need to grow up happy and healthy.

Kidsave and our Angels of Hope are not only helping orphans, but they also continue to provide humanitarian aid to thousands each week across Ukraine. Kidsave has begun providing agricultural assistance to help local Ukrainian communities develop gardens and plant crops to increase food security. Over the last several weeks, the Angels of Hope have sourced and delivered over 22 tons of seed potatoes to 744 families, across 6 villages in Mykolaiv region. The team has also provided food for over 5,000 people in the Mykolaiv and Kherson regions.

Our Kidsave team member has also secured 10 wheelchairs for a support center assisting unhoused people struggling with disabilities or individuals in recovery as they needed more wheelchairs.

Our team is doing everything we can to provide immediate medical and humanitarian aid to those in need. Kidsave’ s commitment to the children of Ukraine began long before the war and will continue long after it ends. Our team continues to get those at risk – including over 13,000 children – to safety and provide aid. When the war ends, we will be there to help Ukraine rebuild.
