Help Break The Poverty Cycle in Venezuela

 2020 was for all of us, without exception, a different, complicated and very difficult year, but one that undoubtedly left us with a learning experience that no school, university or technological institute will ever be able to teach us. In spite of the difficulties, young Venezuelans made their best effort, not only to finish their college education, but also to start one.

In 2020, 10 of our scholarship students graduated from college and 9 young people, despite the adversities, began their college education, betting on a better future for themselves and their families.

Here are some of their stories...

Amanda

Amanda entered our scholarship program in November 2018 and in February 2020 she successfully completed her degree in Education with a mention in Pedagogical Science at the Universidad Católica Andrés Bello - UCAB. On the day of her graduation, Amanda sent us a letter thanking for our support, a gesture that encourages us to continue working in the education of our youth.

She wrote us the following: "...The scholarship that the foundation gave me was fundamental to move forward in my degree, since the current situation in the country made it very difficult for me to pay for college.  Thanks for all the support and for betting on the education of the young people of the country, without further ado I say goodbye and I hope you can continue with this work...".

Upon graduation Amanda worked for a few months in a non-governmental organization called Futuro Presente (@FuturoPresente), which is an NGO that contributes to the strengthening of Venezuelan democracy through training programs. She is currently looking for a new job and waiting to receive a response from any of the positions she has applied for.

Mauricio y Jefte

Mauricio and Jefte are two young people who joined our scholarship program in October 2017 and after three years, in February 2020, they successfully completed their studies as Technicians in Electronics at the Instituto Universitario Jesús Obrero - IUJO.

Mauricio and Jefte are not only friends and classmates, they also worked as a team to successfully do and complete their final project. Both of them currently work at ViveTV, a Venezuelan open television channel of cultural and educational nature.

Karina

Karina is a Chemical Engineering student at the Universidad Metropolitana - UNIMET, who joined our scholarship program in September 2019 as a result of our "I want to graduate" campaign, that the Fundación Oportunidad y Futuro launched earlier that year to raise funds to help students, who were in their final year of college and who were experiencing financial difficulties to pay tuition. As a result, in July 2020 Karina had the opportunity to present remotely and in front of the juries, her final project.

Karina is currently looking for work which, unfortunately due to the pandemic, has been a very difficult task. 

Norkis

Norkis is a student that Fundación Oportunidad y Futuro decided to accept in September 2012 to complete her school education. In July 2020 she received her high school diploma at the Bertrand Rusell School in Caracas. Karina is currently making the necessary arrangements to enroll in the Simón Rodríguez Institute where she will begin her university studies in Business Administration.

Profesor Richard

As part of our commitment to Venezuela, this year the Fundación Oportunidad y Futuro decided to give a special support to Prof. Richard, coordinator of Student Welfare at the Instituto Universitario Jesús Obrero - IUJO, which allowed him to successfully complete, in early 2020, a Master's Degree in Public Management at the Instituto de Estudios Superiores de Administración - IESA (www.iesa.edu.ve). 

Professor Richard has been, since 2015, one of our most important allies and undoubtedly a key figure in the success of our work with IUJO students.

In November 2020, and taking all the sanitary safety measures, the graduation ceremony was held at the IESA campus.

El año 2020 fue para todos, sin excepción, un año diferente, complicado y difícil pero que sin duda alguna nos dejó un aprendizaje que ninguna escuela, universidad o instituto tecnológico nos podrá enseñar jamás. A pesar de las dificultades los jóvenes venezolanos realizaron su mejor esfuerzo, no sólo para concluir sus estudios universitarios, sino de igual manera para iniciarlos.

En 2020 se graduaron 10 de nuestros estudiantes becados y comenzaron sus estudios 9 nuevos jóvenes que, a pesar de las adversidades, apostaron a un mejor futuro para ellos y para sus familias.

A continuación, algunas historias…

Amanda

Amanda ingresa a nuestro programa de becas en noviembre de 2018 y en febrero de 2020 culmina con éxito sus estudios de Educación Mención Ciencias Pedagógicas en la Universidad Católica Andrés Bello - UCAB. El día de su graduación, Amanda nos hizo llegar una carta agradeciendo nuestro apoyo, gesto que nos impulsa a seguir trabajando en la educación de nuestros jóvenes.

Nos escribió lo siguiente: “…La beca que me proporcionó la fundación fue fundamental para sacar adelante la carrera, pues la situación actual del país me hacía muy difícil costear los estudios. Gracias por todo el apoyo y por apostar a la educación de los jóvenes del país, sin más que agregar me despido y espero que puedan continuar con esta labor...”

Al graduarse Amanda trabajó por unos meses en una organización no gubernamental llamada Futuro Presente (@FuturoPresente), que es una ONG que contribuye con el fortalecimiento de la democracia venezolana mediante programas de formación. Actualmente está en buscando trabajo y a la espera de recibir respuesta de alguna de las posiciones a las que ha aplicado.

Mauricio y Jefte

Mauricio y Jefte son dos jóvenes que ingresaron a nuestro programa de becas en octubre de 2017 y luego de tres años, en febrero de 2020, culminaron con éxito sus estudios de Técnico Superior en Electrónica en el Instituto Universitario Jesús Obrero - IUJO.

Mauricio y Jefte no solo son amigos y compañeros de estudios, sino que además formaron equipo para realizar y culminar su trabajo de grado. En la actualidad, ambos trabajan en ViveTV, un canal de televisión abierta venezolano de carácter cultural y educativo.

Karina

Karina es una estudiante de Ingeniería Química de la Universidad Metropolitana - UNIMET, que ingresa a nuestro programa de becas en septiembre de 2019 producto de nuestra campaña “Me quiero graduar” que la FOF lanzó a principios ese año a fin de recaudar fondos para ayudar a culminar sus estudios a estudiantes que estuvieran en el último año de carrera y que tuvieran dificultades económicas. Es así como en julio de 2020 Karina tiene la oportunidad se defender, de forma remota y delante de los jurados, su proyecto de grado.

Actualmente Karina se encuentra en la búsqueda de trabajo que, debido a la pandemia, ha sido una labor difícil.

Norkis

Norkis es una estudiante que la Fundación Oportunidad y Futuro decide aceptar en septiembre de 2012 para completar su formación escolar y en julio de 2020 recibió su título de Bachiller en Ciencias en la Unidad Educativa Bertrand Rusell en la ciudad de Caracas. Actualmente Karina está realizando los trámites necesarios para su ingreso en el Instituto Simón Rodríguez donde comenzará sus estudios universitarios en Administración de Empresas.

Profesor Richard

Como parte de nuestro compromiso con Venezuela, este año la Fundación Oportunidad y Futuro decidió dar un apoyo especial al Prof. Richard, coordinador de Bienestar Estudiantil del Instituto Universitario Jesús Obrero - IUJO, que le permitió finalizar con éxito, a principios de 2020 una maestría en Gerencia Pública en el Instituto de Estudios Superiores de Administración - IESA (www.iesa.edu.ve). 

El Profesor Richard ha sido, desde el año 2015, uno de nuestros aliados más importantes y sin duda alguna, factor fundamental en el éxito de nuestro trabajo con los estudiantes del IUJO.

En noviembre de 2020, y tomando todas las medidas de seguridad sanitarias, se celebró en las instalaciones del IESA el acto de graduación.
