Help Break The Poverty Cycle in Venezuela

2019 is emerging as a very complicated year for our scholars. Due to the political, economic and social crisis in the country, it will be a year full of uncertainty and challenges that will be difficult to navigate for many of them. They will need more than the economic help that the Oportunidad y Futuro Foundation offers them. They will need someone to guide them, to support them, and to advise them when they don't know what to do. One of the strengths that the Oportunidad y Futuro Foundation has and that sets us apart from many of the organizations that support education in Venezuela is the figure of the mentor. Currently our foundation has a staff of 38 mentors, 25 of them active and mostly professionals with years of experience that can be matched to the area of studies of the scholar. They are responsible for giving our students that much-needed support in these difficult times that our country is going through. Mentors can help scholars by:

-        Developing a long-term curriculum with them; recommending subjects to be studied, specializations to follow, projects to be elaborated, etc.

-        Supporting them in their degree work and / or work internships.

-        Helping them prepare their resume.

-        Searching for companies to do internships.

-        Advising them where and how to look for work.

-        Channeling their concerns and personal / family problems in order to provide them with the necessary support.

-        Acting as a bridge between the FOF and the student.

-        Getting feedback from the educational institution about its performance.

Our end-of-year meeting, which took place on December 1, placed special emphasis on this figure so that students and their families could understand the role of mentors and make the most of the support they can receive.

We had the Oliviero Tamassetti as a speaker on behalf of mentors and the testimony of three students, one already graduated and two finishing their studies telling their experiences with their respective tutors. Below are two cases that demonstrate the importance of mentor in the lives of our students.

Daniel and Jorge.

Daniel is 20 years old and in the tenth quarter of Systems Engineering at the Metropolitan University - UNIMET. Daniel has been a scholar since he began college in October 2015. In June of 2018, the foundation received a report from the university where we were informed that by the end of the quarter April-June 2018 Daniel had reached an academic index of 13.68 points (over 20) that was below the minimum required by the university (15 points) to remain in their scholarship program and therefore he would lose the benefit of the scholarship he was receiving from the university.

His tutor, Jorge Zurita, immediately connected with Daniel and set up a meeting with him and his mother in order to analyze the case and find a solution that would prevent Daniel from being forced to quit his studies due to lack of financial resources to pay for the three quarters that were missing to finish his education. It is important to note that, despite not having reached the required index, up to that moment Daniel had approved all the courses taken throughout college.

After analyzing his case, his mentor met with representatives of the Metropolitan University and an agreement was reached that allowed Daniel to continue studying with the commitment to improve his academic index in the time he has left until he graduates.

Eliseo and Marisol.

Eliseo is a 23-year-old young man who graduated in December 2018 as a Bachelor of International Studies at the Central University of Venezuela - UCV and was our scholar since he began his third semester in October 2015.In September 2016 Marisol Black, her tutor, cames and told us that in addition to attending college, Eliseo was taking an English course that consisted of eleven levels, of which she had already approved three. But unfortunately, due to economic problems he would have to quit. Given the importance of English as a language for Eliseo's future professional, Marisol asks us to consider including the rest of the English course in the scholarship. In addition, she was committed to helping him and practicing with him so that at the end of his career he was properly prepared.After two years, Eliseo not only completed his university career, but also completed the English course with excellent grades.

The foundation has many examples of the importance of mentors in scholar lives such as Daniel and Eliseo. Some are easy to solve such as Yenezka corrective lenses (she could not pay and through one of our mentors found an optics that provide them). Others more complicated, like that of Damarys or of the brothers Siri and Jesús where in both cases their  parents lost their lives in 2018. In both cases, through joint work and through the welfare departmentfrom the universities they attend, they were given the necessary psychological support.

Thanks to this excellent group of professionals, who voluntarily support our work, the Oportunidad y Futuro Foundation continues to support young Venezuelans who want to go to college and achieve a better future for themselves and their families.

El año 2019 se perfila como un año muy complicado para nuestros scholars. Un año lleno de incertidumbre, retos y dificultades que para muchos de ellos será difícil superar. Van a necesitar algo más que la ayuda económica que la Fundación Oportunidad y Futuro les brinda. Van a necesitar de alguien que los guíe, que les de soporte, que los apoye y que los aconseje cuando se encuentren perdidos.

Una de las fortalezas que tiene la Fundación Oportunidad y Futuro y que nos diferencia de muchas de las organizaciones que apoyan la educación en Venezuela es la figura del tutor. En la actualidad nuestra fundación cuenta con una plantilla de 38 tutores, 25 de ellos activos y en su mayoría profesionales con años de experiencia relacionada con el área de estudios del muchacho que tiene a su cargo. Ellos son los responsables de dar a nuestros estudiantes ese apoyo que tanto necesitan en estos momentos difíciles que atraviesa nuestro país.

De qué forma pueden los tutores ayudar a los muchachos:

- Elaborar junto con ellos un plan de estudios a largo plazo; recomendando materias a cursar, especializaciones seguir, proyectos que elaborar, etc.

- Apoyarlos en sus trabajos de grado y/o pasantías laborales.

- Ayudarlos a preparar su CV.

- Buscar empresas para hacer pasantías.

- Aconsejarlos donde y como buscar trabajo.

- Canalizar sus inquietudes y problemas personales/familiares a fin de proveerles del apoyo necesario.

- Actuar como puente entre la FOF y el estudiante.

- Obtener feedback de la institución educativa sobre su desempeño.

Este año nuestro encuentro de fin de año, que se realizó el 1 de diciembre, hizo especial hincapié en esta figura para que los estudiantes y sus familias comprendieran la función del tutor y aprovechen al máximo el apoyo que ellos les puedan brindar a lo largo de sus estudios. Tuvimos la intervención de Oliviero Tamassetti en representación de los tutores y el testimonio de tres estudiantes uno ya graduado y dos finalizando sus estudios contando sus experiencias con sus respectivos tutores.

A continuación, se presentan dos casos que confirman la importancia del tutor en la vida de nuestros estudiantes.

Daniel y Jorge.

Daniel es un joven de 20 años y cursa el décimo trimestre de Ingeniería de Sistemas en la Universidad Metropolitana – UNIMET. Daniel es becario nuestro desde que comenzó sus estudios universitarios en octubre de 2015. En junio de 2018 recibimos un informe de la universidad donde se nos informaba que Daniel para el término del trimestre abril-junio 2018 había alcanzado un índice académico de 13,68 puntos (sobre 20) que estaba por debajo del mínimo exigido por la universidad (de 15 puntos) para permanecer en el programa de becas y que por lo tanto a partir ese momento perdía el beneficio de la beca.

Su tutor, Jorge Zurita, se comunica inmediatamente con Daniel y fija una reunión con él y su mamá a fin de analizar el caso y buscar una solución que evitara que Daniel se viera obligado a abandonar sus estudios por falta de recursos económicos para costear los tres trimestres que le faltaban para terminar su carrera. Es importante resaltar que, a pesar de no haber alcanzado el índice necesario, Daniel ha aprobado todas las materias cursadas a lo largo de su carrera.

Después de analizar su caso, nos reunimos con representantes de la Universidad Metropolitana y se llegó a un acuerdo que le permitió a Daniel continuar estudiando con el compromiso de ir mejorando su índice académico en el tiempo que le queda hasta que se gradúe.

Eliseo y Marisol.

Eliseo es un joven de 23 años que en diciembre de 2018 se graduó como Licenciado en Estudios Internacionales en la Universidad Central de Venezuela - UCV y fue becario nuestro desde que comenzó su tercer semestre en octubre de 2015.

En septiembre de 2016 Marisol Black, su tutora, se acerca a nosotros y nos comenta que además de sus estudios universitarios, Eliseo estaba realizando un curso de inglés que constaba de once niveles, de los cuales ya había aprobado tres. Pero que lamentablemente, por problemas económicos iba a tener que abandonarlo. Dada la importancia del inglés como idioma para el futuro profesional de Eliseo, Marisol nos solicita que consideremos incluir en la beca el resto del curso de inglés. Ademas, ella se comprometía a ayudarlo y a practicar con él de manera que al finalizar su carrera estuviera debidamente preparado.

Después de dos años, Eliseo no sólo culminó su carrera universitaria, sino que también completó el curso de inglés con excelentes notas.

Casos como el de Daniel y Eliseo tenemos muchos. Algunos fáciles de resolver como los lentes correctivos de Yenezka que no los podía pagar y a través de uno de nuestros tutores se logró que una óptica se los proporcionara. Otros más complicados, como el de Damarys o el de los hermanos Siri y Jesús donde en ambos casos los estudiantes quedaron huérfanos de padre y madre en el 2018. En ambos casos, mediante un trabajo en conjunto y a través del departamento de Bienestar Estudiantil de sus respectivas casas de estudio, se les brindó el apoyo psicológico necesario.

Gracias a este excelente grupo de profesionales, que de manera absolutamente voluntaria apoyan nuestra labor, la Fundación Oportunidad y Futuro continuará apoyando a jóvenes venezolanos con ganas de estudiar y de superarse, a alcanzar un mejor futuro para ellos y para sus familias.
