THE PROBLEM
"... The education system in Venezuela collapsed as a result of the economic, political and social crisis in the country . It has caused that 45% of teachers quit working in public education and 60% in private education. For every 10 children who enter first grade only 2 graduate from high school and drop out in secondary education exceeds 75%. We have a debacle, an absolute setback in the Venezuelan educational system. Those who are still going to college to become teachers are leaving the country; the educators are emigrating massively; children faint in classrooms; teachers and students can not attend schools because they do not have the means to pay for public transportation; the schools that do not open; there is no teaching material; basic services (electricity and water) do not work ... "This is expressed by Prof. Robert Rodríguez, professor and researcher at the Universidad Pedagógica Experimental Libertador - UPEL.
A report from the newspaper ABC de España in September 2018 revealed that in Venezuela while 60% of students dropped out, between 30% and 40% of teachers decided to leave the country leaving the classrooms empty. According to unofficial figures for this school year 2018-2019 (which began on October 1), the school population has been reduced to less than half, there are only about three million children in the classrooms. The main reasons for this absence are the lack of food, medicine and the very poor purchasing power of Venezuelans.

These are a few of many testimonies from educational institutions, NGOs, students, teachers and especially parents who daily suffer the consequences of this crisis and who in many cases must choose between feeding or educating their children, since they lack the economic resources necessary to satisfy their needs.
OUR CONTRIBUTION
For the above reasons, Fundacion Oportunidad y Futuro decided that during the academic year 2018-2019, and thanks to the contributions received through GlobalGiving, efforts will be directed to support college students who pursue a career as teacher/education.
On Saturday, October 20 at San José de Tarbes School in El Paraíso - Caracas, we held the first meeting to welcome the first seven students who, thanks to their high academic performance, received scholarships. All of them are pursuing a college degree in Education (Teacher) at the Andrés Bello Catholic University - UCAB.
In addition to the college students, attendees were: 1) Prof. Beatriz Rodríguez Carrillo, a teacher with more than 40 years of experience in the educational area, Support Coordinator for Educational Management at San José de Tarbes School in El Paraíso. Prof. Rodriguez will be their tutor and support them throughout their college years and until graduation; and 2) Marisa Carrasquero on behalf of Fundacion Oportunidad y Futuro.
In addition to welcome students to Fundacion Oportunidad y Futuro and signing agreements, students had the opportunity to get to know each other, exchange ideas on their own initiatives and made a commitment to support each other and joined efforts to share books (e.g. they created a WhatsApp group for those purposes).
With them, the number of active fellows currently supported by the Fundacion Oportunidad y Futuro reaches 54, and we hope it will increase to 60 during the first semester of 2019.

- Asly is 22 years old and is studying the eighth semester of Education in Pedagogical Sciences.
- Ofelia is 25 years old and studies the seventh semester of Education, with a major in Biology and Chemistry.
- Roisdelyth is 21 years old and is studying the second semester of Education with a Pre-School Education.
- Fernando is 20 years old and is studying the seventh semester of Education, with a major in Pedagogical Sciences.

La Crisis Educativa en Venezuela
EL PROBLEMA
“…El sistema educativo en Venezuela se desploma como consecuencia de la crisis económica, política y social que vive el país y que ha generado que el 45% de los maestros abandone la educación pública, que el 60% abandone la educación privada, que de cada 10 niños que ingresan a primer grado solo 2 se gradúan de bachilleres y que la deserción escolar en la educación media supere el 75%. Tenemos un desplome, una debacle, un retroceso absoluto en el sistema educativo venezolano. Los pocos maestros que todavía estamos graduando se están yendo del país; los educadores están emigrando masivamente; los niños se desmayan en los salones de clase; los profesores y estudiantes no pueden asistir a las escuelas porque no tienen como pagar los pasajes; las escuelas que no abren; no hay material didáctico; los servicios básicos (electricidad y agua) no funcionan...” Así lo expresa el Prof. Robert Rodríguez, profesor e investigador de la Universidad Pedagógica Experimental Libertador – UPEL.
Un reportaje del diario ABC de España de septiembre de 2018 reveló que en Venezuela mientras el 60% de los estudiantes desertaron, entre 30% y 40% de los profesores decidieron salir del país dejando las aulas vacías y de acuerdo con cifras extraoficiales, para este período escolar 2018-2019 (que comenzó el 1 de octubre), la población escolar se ha reducido a menos de la mitad, solo hay unos tres millones de niños en los salones de clases. Las razones principales de esta ausencia son la falta de alimentos, medicinas y el paupérrimo poder adquisitivo de los venezolanos.

Como éstos, son muchísimos los testimonios de instituciones educativas, ONGs, estudiantes, profesores y especialmente de padres de familia que diariamente sufren las consecuencias de esta crisis y que en muchos casos deben elegir entre alimentar o educar a sus hijos, ya que carecen de los recursos económicos necesarios para satisfacer amabas necesidades.
NUESTRO APORTE
Es por esto que en la Fundación Oportunidad y Futuro decidimos, para el período académico 2018-2019, y gracias a los aportes recibidos a través de GlobalGiving, dirigir nuestros esfuerzos en apoyar de manera especial a los estudiantes de educación.
El día sábado 20 de octubre se realizó, en las instalaciones del Colegio San José de Tarbes de El Paraíso, el primer encuentro para dar la bienvenida a los primeros siete estudiantes que, gracias a su alto rendimiento académico, se hicieron merecedores de las becas a partir del mes de noviembre de 2018 y hasta que finalicen sus estudios universitarios, todos ellos estudiantes de la Universidad Católica Andrés Bello – UCAB.
Al encuentro asistieron, además de los estudiantes, la Prof. Beatriz Rodríguez Carrillo, docente con más de 40 años de experiencia en el área educativa, Coordinadora de Apoyo a la Gestión Educativa del Colegio San José de Tarbes de El Paraíso, que será su tutora y les brindará apoyo a lo largo de toda su carrera universitaria y hasta que se gradúen; y Marisa Carrasquero en representación de la Fundación Oportunidad y Futuro.
Además de darles la bienvenida a la Fundación Oportunidad y Futuro y realizar la firma de los convenios correspondientes, los estudiantes tuvieron la oportunidad de conocerse, intercambiar ideas y por iniciativa de ellos mismos tomaron el compromiso de apoyarse entre todos y aunar esfuerzos para compartir libros de texto y material de apoyo a través de un grupo de Whatsapp que crearon para ese fin.
Con ellos llega a 54 el número de becarios activos que actualmente apoya la Fundación Oportunidad y Futuro, y que esperamos se incremente a 60 para el primer semestre de 2019.
